Jane Fonda Is Worried About Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Barbarella’ Reboot

In a recent discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, Fonda spoke about her concerns with the remake of “Barbarella,” saying she is worried “about what it’s going to be.”
The original 1968 science fiction movie, in which Fonda starred, had an astronaut from the future travel through time to thwart a mad scientist whose creation could destroy the galaxy.
Fonda disclosed that she had suggestions for how the Dino De Laurentiis’ directed movie could have been more “feminist” and had shared them with him, but her ideas were disregarded.
“I had an idea of how to do it that [original producer] Dino De Laurentiis when he was still alive, wouldn’t listen to. But it could have been a truly feminist movie,” she told the outlet.
Sydney Sweeney To Star In ‘Barbarella’ Reboot

According to Insider, actress Sydney Sweeney, best known for playing Cassie Howards on “Euphoria,” will star and executive produce the new film reboot.
The movie is reportedly still being worked on and is in development without a writer or director attached to it.
Sweeney took to Instagram to confirm the news of her appearance in the movie, as she posted a photo of the original film poster and captioned it, “time to save the universe.”
Fans React To Sydney Sweeney’s Casting

Following news of Sweeney’s adoption of “Barbarella,” fans of the cult classic and the “Euphoria” actress made a lot of inquiries online, with some questioning why the movie needs a remake.
A fan said, “No need for a remake. Barbarella from 1962 is such a rare piece of art. I loved the fashion from that movie but maybe do something different and leave the original film stand out.”
Another fan lamented, “why can’t we just have a completely new original film instead of remaking everything under the sun/ shitty half-baked biopics.”
A third fan pointed out the same thing, saying, “why can’t Hollywood come up with new ideas?! Stop the remakes.”

Some other fans were not comfortable with Sweeney’s choice, pointing out the contrast between her and Fonda.
“The worst choice to replace Jane. Could not pick a more opposing and uninspiring figure to do this role,” a fan noted.
Another fan said, “Jane who’s Known for her progressive thinking and social activism. Who was pregnant while filming Barbarella. Sydney Sweeney is the antithesis of Jane Fonda.”
Jane Fonda Only Sees Acting As A Tool

The “Coming Home” star explained during her interview with The Hollywood Reporter that her outlook on acting as a career has since changed.
Fonda, 85, who will not be featured in the “Barbarella” remake, said that acting is a tool that helps her garner attention for the causes in which she has an interest.
“One feeds the other,” she disclosed. “I recently thought, ‘Maybe I do want to quit acting.’ I mean, I’m 85. But then I realized my platform matters. It brings people in that might not come in normally.”

Apart from her activism, Fonda also hopes to inspire a message of her experience of friendship through her body of work and her work rate at age 85, despite being diagnosed with cancer last year.
“There’s not a lot of representation for older female friends that felt authentic to Jane’s experience,” Kyle Marvin, the director of Fonda’s “80 for Brady,” pointed out.
“It’s something she clearly thinks about and values. What we talked about was the idea of exploring female friendship of that age in a nuanced way,” he added per THR.
