Following the release of the third and final season of “Euphoria,” Sydney Sweeney has been at the center of intense debate due to her character Cassie’s twist, which many have branded “oversexualized.”
Concerns have also been raised about the long-term impact of such raunchy roles on the actress’s career, and the risk of nudity becoming her “entire brand.”
However, some experts disagree with the worries, noting that Sydney Sweeney has been hit with bigger controversies, such as the American Eagle ad campaign, and has come out even stronger.
Sydney Sweeney Has ‘Established Herself’ Beyond ‘Euphoria’

Sweeney’s character in “Euphoria,” Cassie, took a very raunchy turn in the third installment of the hit show by pursuing an OnlyFans career, which leads her to participate in excessive displays of nudity in an attempt to get rich and famous.
Her steamy scenes have gone viral online, sparking heavy backlash from fans and critics, who accused the showrunners of oversexualizing the Cassie character and the actress portraying her.
This prompted top brand experts to caution Sweeney about her choice of roles, noting that she risks getting typecast for always showing nudity, which could derail her blossoming career.
But PR expert Lisa K. Sass does not agree with this assertion in an interview with the Irish Star.
“Sydney Sweeney has been in the headlines all year: her American Eagle campaign, back-to-back box office misses, her dating life, political commentary (or lack thereof),” Sass stated. “In my opinion, those storylines carry far more career risk than a few nude scenes in a show she’s been part of for years.”
“If this were her debut role, then I think it would be a different story. But her career spans nearly two decades and includes a wide range of roles, so she’s already established herself beyond Euphoria,” the expert added.
PR Expert Claims The Actress Is ‘Deliberately’ Choosing Racy Roles

Regarding Sweeney’s choice of acting roles, the PR expert, Sass, noted that the Emmy-nominated star is likely leaning into her sex appeal and taking on roles that make full use of it.
“I really believe she’s leaning into her image deliberately. She has her own lingerie collection and is publicly comfortable in her body,” Sass said.
“We’re in 2026 – nude scenes no longer impact future roles like they used to,” the expert concluded.
Sass’ remarks come after crisis and reputation management expert Dave Quast told Fox News Digital that Sweeney’s raunchy roles could have a negative impact on her career in the long run.
He noted, “The risk is that when the public conversation focuses more on the sexualised aspects of the role than on the performance, the same work that made her seem daring can start to narrow the brand.”
“For Sweeney, the challenge is not that she has played sexualised roles. The challenge is making sure those roles continue to read as character choices, not as the entire brand proposition,” Quast added.
Sydney Sweeney’s Career Has Been On The Rise

While it’s impossible to tell what the future holds for Sweeney, things seem to be great for her right now career-wise, despite the raunchy scenes.
Away from “Euphoria,” she is set to lead some major studio projects, such as the “Barbarella” remake, and “Scandalous!” where she will portray iconic Hollywood actress, Kim Novak.
Sweeney will also reprise her role as Millie Calloway in the sequel to her 2025 movie, “The Housemaid,” which was a critical and commercial success.
She also has a growing business with her lingerie line, Syrn, and continues to appear in campaign ads for major fashion brands, including a new American Eagle campaign.
The Actress Boldly Returned For A New American Eagle Jeans Ad

Sweeney seemingly had the last laugh after coming under fire for her first American Eagle ad, as the popular denim brand tapped her again in April for another campaign promoting their jean shorts.
In the campaign shared on YouTube, the “Euphoria” star modeled a number of the brand’s summer-ready jean shorts but kept conversation to the barest minimum.
Standing against a sky-blue cloudy backdrop, the ad campaign dubbed “Syd for Short: American Eagle Jean Shorts” saw Sweeney wear a denim jacket on denim shorts while putting both hands in her pockets.
“What brand am I wearing?” she said as the camera zoomed in on her. “Yeah, that one.”
According to reports, proceeds from the jean shorts designs that have butterfly detailing in honor of domestic violence survivors will be donated to the Crisis Text Line organization.
About The Sydney Sweeney American Eagle Jean Ad Backlash

The “Anyone But You” actress previously garnered massive backlash for featuring in an American Eagle campaign, which had the tagline “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
In the promotional video, she could be seen reclining on a couch and fastening her jeans while she murmured, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My genes are blue.”
A male narrator then added, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
The impact was instant as several internet users criticized her for the wordplay, accusing her of fostering white supremacy and eugenic rhetoric.
At the time, American Eagle released a statement defending the ad: “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans, her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
