Mel B, a member of the famous music group Spice Girls, recently revealed that she chose not to wear underwear beneath her dress when she received an award from Prince William at the Buckingham Palace recently.
During an interview with UK’s The Sun, Mel B, whose full name is Melanie Brown, said that she chose to be nude under her Victoria Beckham designed dress while she received an MBE award, also known as the Order of the British Empire.
Mel B was awarded for her work as a patron and supporter of Women’s Aid, which is a charity for domestic violence. The award is given to people who have made a positive impact in their line of work. Read on to find out more.
Mel B Decided To Go Naked Under Her Dress
During the interview, Mel B said she chose to be “stark, buttock naked” beneath the dress after a conversation she had with another former Spice Girl and fashion designer, Victoria Beckham, who flew in to handpick her outfit for the event. She said, “Victoria asked me, ‘Will you wear nipple covers?’ I said, ‘Why bother?'”
During the MBE ceremony, when Prince William had to place the pin on her dress, he asked a female official on the stage to do it instead. Mel B shared her opinion of the moment and said, “I didn’t think I had that much cleavage on show!”
The “Viva Forever” singer also explained that she “felt guilty” during the awards event because of the pin situation and because she spent a lot of time talking to Prince William, which took time from the other people waiting to collect their awards.
Prince William Mistook The Reason Behind Her Award
Mel B also spoke about her conversations with Prince William and said, “I think William thought I was receiving the MBE for being a Spice Girl, but I told him that it was for my work on domestic violence. He wanted to hear all about it.”
Mel B got involved with domestic abuse awareness when she opened up about the personal abuse she experienced at the hands of her husband in her 2018 autobiography titled “Brutally Honest.” Shortly after, she started working with the British charity Women’s Aid with the aim of “End domestic abuse.”
Mel B also said that Prince William said, “That must be really fulfilling for you to talk about it and help women.” And in response, she said, “I said that my story is exactly like so many of the women I meet and that I managed to get out and survive. It was a really good conversation and a very special moment for me.”
They Spoke About A Spice Girls Reunion
Following protocol, Mel B curtsied before the Prince before he presented her with the pin to recognize her work with victims of domestic abuse and violence and vulnerable women. She also revealed that they spoke about the Spice Girls during their conversation on the stage.
She said, “William told me, ‘I’m so delighted that it’s me giving you this. And he asked, ‘Will you get the Spice Girls back together?’ I told him I was having dinner with Victoria that evening and he said, ‘Oh good, I’ll work on David (Victoria’s husband) then.'”
Mel B has also recently reunited with another former Spice Girl, Emma Bunton, and the two featured in season four of The Circle. The two-star singers pretended to be a man called Jared to see how long their ruse could go on before the other contestants discovered the truth.
Mel B Was Super Excited About The Award
Mel B also spoke about how happy she was when she received the news about her award. She said, “I thought about all the women I’ve met over the past few years who have been through terrible situations, women who have died, women who are still suffering.
“‘This, for me, was all about them. It still is,'” she continued: “Receiving that letter telling me about the MBE… it was the first time I thought I’d done something. Not as a Spice Girl, but as Melanie Brown – this working-class, mixed-race kid from Leeds who has always done her own thing, regardless.
She concluded, “That made me feel incredibly proud of myself, of all women who’ve been through similar experiences, and of all the people who have helped me along this path.”
