Prince William has come under the microscope after reports claimed he pays as much as $9.5 million in annual income tax, with critics now demanding proof to back up the assertion.

Skeptics argue that the figure has been presented without concrete evidence, noting that no official documentation or receipts have been made public.

The backlash has also reignited comparisons with King Charles III, who has previously offered more detailed glimpses into his financial affairs. Critics say the perceived gap in transparency doesn’t reflect well on the future king, especially as public expectations around royal accountability continue to grow.

William’s reported $9.5 million tax bill is stirring debate after a new report claim/ed the heir apparent is following in his father’s footsteps by paying taxes on income from the Duchy of Cornwall.

While the figure is undeniably eye-catching, critics say it comes wrapped in vague language, with phrases like “up to,” “it is understood,” and “can be revealed” raising questions about how solid the number really is.

Writing for Feminegra, one critic argued that the report falls short of offering true transparency, noting the absence of any published tax return, full financial breakdown, or clear outline of deductions. Without those details, they claim the headline figure feels less like verified disclosure and more like carefully managed optics designed to cast the prince in a favorable light.

Critics Question Missing Details In William’s Tax Claim

Critics are now doubling down on the lack of detail around William’s official expenses. The report suggested the heir pays tax on an estimated $17 million of taxable income, drawn from roughly $25 million generated by the Duchy of Cornwall. But it remains unclear what expenses were deducted to arrive at that figure, or how those costs were calculated.

Some of those deductions could relate to official duties not fully covered by the monarchy, but no breakdown was provided.

Commenting on the report, one critic bluntly said, “A tax figure without a published return is not transparency, it’s public relations with a pound sign attached.”

The critic also pointed out that William’s father offered clearer insight into his tax payments before ascending the throne. They said the Prince of Wales could have provided similar clarity when his estate’s annual report was released, but chose not to.

The debate has also drawn comparisons with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, whose earnings have been heavily scrutinized despite stepping back as working royals.

For critics, the issue goes beyond whether William pays millions in taxes. They argue that without a full breakdown, the main figure carries little weight and shouldn’t be taken at face value or widely applauded.

William Once Admitted He ‘Didn’t Know’ His Net Worth

William has long taken a cautious approach when discussing his personal wealth, often sidestepping questions despite the intense public interest in royal finances.

That stance was put on display during a visit to the Hideaway Youth Project in Manchester in November 2023, when an unexpected question caught him off guard.

According to The Telegraph, a young attendee, Amir Hassan, asked the future king point-blank: “How much do you have in your bank account?”

The blunt question drew laughter, but William didn’t offer a figure, or even an estimate. Instead, he simply replied that he “didn’t know,” a response that has since resurfaced amid ongoing scrutiny over his finances.

Beyond the income generated from his estate, Prince William also draws from longstanding family wealth, including inheritances from his great-grandmother, the Queen Mother, and his mother, Princess Diana. He also earned a salary during his time in the British Armed Forces, notably serving as a Royal Air Force search-and-rescue pilot.

Despite the scrutiny surrounding his finances, William has frequently used his wealth to support charitable causes.

One of the clearest examples came in 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when he and Catherine, Princess of Wales, donated £1.8 million to aid mental health initiatives and frontline workers.
