Kristin Davis is a very successful actress who is most famous for her role as Charlotte York on Sex and the City, its successful feature films, and the 2021 revival of the show, titled And Just Like That.
Her long and successful career has seen her act in iconic roles in several famous shows and movies. One iconic show that Davis almost featured in was Friends. The actress recently revealed that she auditioned for the role of one major character but then got her role on Sex And The City.
Here is everything Davis said about her audition for the role, her eventual feature on the show, and her success from Sex and the City.
Davis auditioned for the role of Monica Gellar
Before she landed the role as Charlotte York on Sex and the City, Davis auditioned to play the character of Monica Geller on Friends! Unfortunately or fortunately, she didn’t get the role and chose to play York.
In an appearance she made on The Late Late Show with James Corden this December, Davis spoke about the audition and revealed that she really wanted the part that, in the end, went to Courteney Cox. She said, “I was one of like 8,000 young ladies who read for Monica.”
Eventually, Davis did make an appearance on Friends!, in an episode titled “The One With Ross’s Library Book,” where she played the character of Erin, a woman who had a one-night stand with Joey Tribbiani.
Davis And Cox Were Friends Before The Audition
In another surprising twist, Davis also revealed that she and Cox were close friends, and they celebrated Cox getting the role of Monica together. She said, “Courteney and I were in the same yoga class at the time, and we used to hang out. The rest of us were, like, unemployed actor-waitresses types, and we would hang out after class.”
She then explained that she found out Cox had gotten the role of Monica during a car shopping trip. She described the incident and said, “One day, Courteney was like, ‘Hey guys, do you want to come car shopping with me?’ She said, ‘I did this pilot, and I’m feeling really good about it; I think I’m gonna buy a Porsche!”
Davis shared that she and the other girls on the trip were impressed by what Cox said and that “We were like, ‘Wow! Is she for real?’ And it was Friends, and it did go very well.”
Cox Almost Played Rachel Green
With how loved the character of Monica Geller is, it is difficult to imagine anyone else other than Cox playing the iconic role. It is even harder to imagine her playing another iconic character in the series, Rachel Green, but it almost happened.
According to a post by Hollywood.com, when Cox was shortlisted at the audition for Friends, she was first asked to play the role of Rachel Green. However, she turned it down and fought to play Monica instead, and in the end, the role of Green went to Jennifer Aniston.
Marta Kauffman, a co-creator of Friends! revealed, “We originally offered Rachel to Courteney Cox.” But Cox declined because she wanted to play Monica as she wanted a “stronger female role.”
Davis Was A Hit On Sex And The City
In 1998, Davis auditioned and was cast as the character of York in the romance and comedy series Sex and the City. The show quickly became famous, and she remained a core member of the cast until it ended in 2004.
In 1999, she and the show’s cast were awarded the Women in Film Lucy Award to recognize their innovation and excellence for improving the perception of women through Sex and the City. Davis was also nominated for an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award in recognition of her performance as an outstanding Supporting Actress in the final season of Sex and the City.
In 2008, Davis reprised her role as York on the “Sex and the City” film, and it was a massive success at the box office and earned good ratings from viewers and critics. She also featured as York again in the film’s sequel, “Sex and the City 2,” which was also a big success.
