Donald Trump’s victory lap over the Iran conflict has triggered pushback from critics who contend the facts tell a different story.
As the president continues to defend the outcome as a success, MS NOW host Lawrence O’Donnell has accused him of misrepresenting the situation.
The reporter also described the billionaire politician as an “imbecile” over his claim that Iran has agreed never to have a nuclear weapon.
Donald Trump’s Iran Deal Claim Faces Sharp Pushback
Donald Trump has been celebrating a potential deal with Iran that would supposedly see the country agree never to have a nuclear weapon. MS NOW host Lawrence O’Donnell has, however, heavily criticized the president over whether the outcome is truly a win.
The United States and Iran have been locked in a conflict that has carried significant geopolitical and economic consequences, including disruptions to shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil supplies.
“Only an imbecile could think that that would be some kind of breakthrough in 2026, to have a written agreement that says Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” O’Donnell said after playing footage of Trump boasting to a reporter at the G7 summit, per Huff Post.
O’Donnell Says Trump Simply Repackaged Obama’s Deal

In criticizing Trump, O’Donnell argued that the victory the president is touting amounts to little more than a return to the same agreement that former President Barack Obama reached with Iran in 2015.
“Eleven years ago, Iran put this in writing in the publicly released, 18-page, written agreement negotiated by [then] Secretary of State John Kerry and agreed to by the United States and five other countries,” O’Donnell added during his monologue.
To reinforce his argument, “The Last Word” host cited portions of the 2015 agreement negotiated under Obama.
“Iran reaffirms that under no circumstances will Iran ever seek, develop, or acquire any nuclear weapons,” O’Donnell said of the then-agreement, which Trump backed out of during his first term.
Donald Trump Also Branded A Liar Over Iran Deal

O’Donnell later shifted into outright mockery, turning up the sarcasm as he continued to criticize the president’s claims.
“So, Donald Trump’s big claim today after going to war with Iran is that his war has convinced Iran to put in writing exactly what Iran put in writing 11 years ago without a war,” the TV host commented. “Yes, Donald Trump thinks you’re imbeciles if you believe that.”
He also called the president a liar and suggested that dishonesty has been a recurring feature of both his first and second terms in the White House.
“Donald Trump is approaching his so-called deal with Iran the only way he knows how, which is to lie about it nonstop. That is what Donald Trump wants Congress to do,” O’Donnell further added.
Trump Accused Of Hiding Details Of Iran Deal

Ahead of the ceremonial signing of the memorandum on Friday, the details of the agreement were made public following an initial leak to the press.
However, Trump had earlier kept the specifics close to his chest while speaking with a reporter, offering few details beyond describing the agreement as a “great” deal.
To O’Donnell, however, the secrecy Trump displayed at the time was telling. The MS NOW host argued that Trump is aware the agreement closely resembles the Obama-era deal and does not want the American public to realize it after the country expended significant resources pursuing a conflict with Iran.
“That’s the lie that Donald Trump must keep telling to try to desperately justify his war in Iran, which most Americans opposed, and his deal with Iran — that is so embarrassing, he can’t let the wording of it become public,” O’Donnell also noted.
Donald Trump Rips Critics Questioning Iran Deal
Aside from criticism from commentators such as O’Donnell, the deal has also drawn scrutiny from several Republican lawmakers, including Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Sen. John Cornyn, and Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton.
However, Trump dismissed the concerns raised by those senators and other critics in a scathing post on his Truth Social platform after returning from the G7 summit.
“These fools, who think I haven’t been tough enough on Iran, when the Stock Market Just Hit A RECORD HIGH, and Oil prices are ‘tumbling’ down, are either jealous, bad people, or stupid,” he wrote.
