There is obviously no set date for Prince Charles to become king. With Queen Elizabeth in her mid-nineties though, it's pretty natural that a lot of people are going to want to look to the future and what the United Kingdom under King Charles could potentially look like. From reports coming from across the pond, it seems that Prince Charles would be keen to cut back on royal spending. That idea could directly affect how his brothers Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward are allowed to live their lives.

The Sunday Times reported this past Sunday, that Charles could be considering not passing on the title of Duke of Edinburgh, famously held by his late father, to his brother Edward. The Queen's youngest son is not even a Duke. He's actually the Earl of Wessex. In short, his nephews William and Harry were given better treatment than him! It makes sense though they are closer to the throne. In any case, according to Edward himself, Prince Phillip had expressed his desire that the title would pass on to him once both the Queen and Prince Philip died. Charles could have other plans.

Edward may not be named a "Duke" what a sad story! Why does this matter? Charles as the king could directly decide what titles to give out to his brothers and other members of the royal family. Not giving out the title of Duke of Edinburgh to Edward as previously planned could have major ramifications on the family. It could be a way for Charles to set his foot down and make it clear that he is in charge. It could also be a great way to make it clear to everyone that he wants to reduce the number of actively working royals in the family. It's all a money thing in the end.

There has been a lot of speculation about this. Charles has mentioned that he intends to reduce the number of working royals. What this really means is that he wants to reduce the number of people in his family that get taxpayer money. This can actually be a good way to protect the monarchy. The idea is to make sure that the people don't come to the conclusion that keeping the monarchy is too expensive for the country. They already retired Prince Andrew from royal duties because of his "shady" friends. Who's to say Charles won't give Edward the ax as well!

Edward Should Morally Get The Title

Just morally speaking it would make sense that Prince Edward would get the title of Duke of Edinburgh. Mainly because he is the one that has taken on most of the "work" left behind by Prince Philip. For example, he is the one currently in charge of running the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. Which, is potentially his father's biggest legacy. It would only make sense that the official Duke of Edinburgh run that award scheme. The only problem is, his brother may not be as keen to throw money his way as his mother currently is!
