Atlanta rapper Jeezy has broken his silence regarding his shocking separation from his wife of two years, Jeannie Mai.

The music artist filed for divorce from Mai at the Fulton County Superior Court in September. At the time, it was claimed that the TV personality had no idea of her husband's intentions to end their marriage.

In a statement released through his reps, the rapper claims that the decision "was not made impulsively and comes with a heavy heart."

He noted that his "love and respect for Jeannie remains and the time we spent together holds a cherished place in my heart."

Jeezy and Mai married in March 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic at an intimate ceremony held at their Atlanta home. The duo first met when Jeezy appeared as a guest on her talk show “The Real.”

“Years later, he asked me out on a date,” Mai told Vanity Fair. “We shared a romantic sushi dinner in Los Angeles and salsa danced the night away. Later that evening, he asked if I could picture spending the rest of my life with him. And crazy enough, I could.”

Since their split, it's been claimed that the estranged couple still live together at their Georgia home but hardly interact with each other.

Jeannie Mai Congratulates Jeezy On His Memoir

Mai and Jeezy, who have a two-year-old daughter, Monaco, also have a prenuptial agreement that allegedly does not favor the talk show host.

The estranged couple often share glimpses of their love story and family on social media. Shortly before Jeezy filed for divorce, Mai took to her Instagram page to celebrate the rapper’s milestone after his memoir, Adversity For Sale, became a New York Times bestseller.

“Today I celebrate a remarkable milestone achieved by my husband, @jeezy, whose memoir ‘Adversity For Sale’ has soared to the New York Times bestsellers list,” Mai wrote in its caption.

“This moment isn’t just a testament to your literary skills baby, but a recognition of your ability to inspire through the power of storytelling. I’m endlessly grateful for your voice in this world. Honored to walk beside you, my love.”

After Jeezy's shock filing, Jeannie reportedly invested a significant effort into healing the rift and finding common ground in order to salvage their marriage.

In September, a source told People magazine that she was “hurt and devastated” by the rapper's decision to get a divorce, adding, “She got married to stay married” and is “committed to trying to save her marriage.”

“They’ve had issues for a long time, but things got really hard over the last few months,” another source noted. “He spends nearly all his time in Atlanta, and she was flying back and forth between there and LA. She was scaling back a bit and trying to spend more time in Atlanta to work on their issues.”

The source added, “She obviously knew they had problems, but she wasn’t expecting a divorce. Now she’s trying to figure out what her future looks like and where she’ll be living.”
