This weekend, Ted Kaczynski, better known as the “Unabomber,” was found deceased in his jail cell.

Kaczynski was found in his cell unresponsive. He was being held in Butner, N.C., and according to the Bureau of Prisons, he died by suicide at 81. He was reportedly battling late-stage cancer at the time of his death.

According to the New York Times, his death is being investigated as a suicide, and no foul play is expected. Kaczynski murdered three people and injured as much as 23 more during a bombing spree from 1975 until 1995.

The Washington Post published his manifesto in 1995, leading to this arrest and, ultimately, charges. After over a decade of terrorizing people, he was outed by his own family.

When the manifesto hit the paper, Kaczynski’s brother, David, and his sister-in-law Linda Patrick knew who wrote it immediately. They recognized phrases from the note and turned him in to the authorities.

He was officially arrested in 1996 when police swarmed his cabin deep in the woods of Lincoln, Mont. He was slapped with a litany of charges to which he eventually pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to life without parole, allowing him to avoid the death penalty.

Kaczynski died by suicide, and this is not the first time he attempted to kill himself during his extended prison stay.

The murderer attempted to kill himself while awaiting trial. According to PEOPLE magazine, he tried to hang himself with a pair of underwear. He was eventually locked up in a supermax prison in Florence, Colo.

It is known as the “Alcatraz of the Rockies; he spent more than 20 years there. In 2021, he was moved to a medical facility in North Carolina while he battled cancer. This is where he ended up taking his own life.

It has not been revealed that he took his life, but many publications confirm it. Believe it or not, Kaczynski wain the middle of an assistant professorship at UC Berkeley. He was in his second year when he abruptly left and began planting bombs that ultimately did a lot of damage.

The FBI has never spent more money or longer on a search. It was nearly decades-long, and all it took was publishing his manifesto for his family to recognize. How much money was spent on this search hasn't been disclosed, but it was reportedly quite a lot.

Kaczynski was known for building his bombs and mailing them to his victims. He wanted to dismantle modern society, technological advances, and how it will impact the environment. At his cabin, bomb parts were found.

Also found were roughly 40,000 journal pages that incriminated the murderer and a live bomb that FBI agents reported later reported was ready to be mailed.
