Director Shawn Levy has given fans another exciting update about his Star Wars movie.
The project was first announced in early November and while there is no word yet on when the movie will be released, fans of the Lucasfilm franchise are excited nonetheless. The last Star Wars movie to hit theaters was 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” which wrapped up the nine-episode Skywalker Saga.
Since then, Disney has kept the franchise alive through a series of animated and live-action shows on their streaming platform Disney+. This includes “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Andor,” “Ahsoka,” “The Acolyte,” and many more. Still, fans are eager to head back to theaters to see a Star Wars movie, and fans have their fingers crossed that Levy’s new Star Wars movie will give them a chance to get back into theaters.
Shawn Levy Reveals The Status Of His New Star Wars Movie: ‘I Have This Golden Ticket To A Galaxy Far Away’
One of the reasons fans are excited to see Shawn Levy helm a movie in a galaxy far, far away is that Levy himself seems to be a big fan of the franchise. Levy is best known for his work on “The Adam Project” and “Free Guy,” both of which starred “Deadpool” actor Ryan Reynolds.
Star Wars references were peppered throughout both films, with Levy admitting that he worked the Endor chase sequence from 1983’s “Return of the Jedi” in “The Adam Project” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Although fans are excited to see what Levy will do with his “golden ticket” into the franchise, Levy still has a lot of work to do as he directs “Deadpool 3,” which will mark yet another collaboration with Ryan Reynolds. Due to his commitment to the Marvel antihero, it looks like it will be a while before Levy actually begins to work on his highly-anticipated Star Wars film.
In an interview with Collider, via Screen Rant, Shawn Levy revealed that he has been talking to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy “for a while now” and assures fans that he is going to work his a—off to make a great movie while at the same time admitting, “There’s a lot of work to be done.”
"Yes. I'm very aware of the ratio of filmmakers who get to the starting line. As you know, Steve, I'm a student of the business, and so of course I note that,” Levy said. “But here's my attitude: I have this golden ticket into a galaxy far away, and I'm going to devote myself to developing a screenplay that gives me the privilege of making this movie.”
“I don't attach to things because it looks good in a trade announcement. I attach to things that I intend to make. And you better believe I'm not going to squander this juiciest of opportunities,” he continued. “I'm going to work my a-- off. But first, I got to work my a-- off on making Deadpool. So it's definitely longer-term planning, but I want to be one of the movies that gets to the starting line because these are rare opportunities, and I want to make the most of it."
“I’ve been talking with Kathy Kennedy for a while now, and she’s been aware of my passion for this franchise for a long time. The stars finally aligned, and she came to me and was like, let’s do something here,” he added. “And that's as much as I can say. But this is definitely development and not yet close to prep. So there's a lot of work to be done.”
Although there is a lot of work to be done, it sounds like Shawn Levy is committed to the project being made. Since Patty Jenkins' "Rogue Squadron" was removed from the Disney release calendar and "The Last Jedi" director Rian Johnson's trilogy still sitting on the back burner behind his "Knives Out" franchise, the news that Levy is committed to finishing his movie still sounds like good news to many fans.
Damon Lindelof Is Also Getting His Own 'Star Wars' Movie!
Fortunately, that’s not the only movie that fans should be excited about. “Lost” and “The Leftovers” creator Damon Lindelof is also getting his own Star Wars movie with an exciting timeline twist. This movie will take place after 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”
Although the Disney+ Star Wars series have jumped back in time, fans are excited to get a look at the shape of the galaxy after the events of the final movie in the Skywalker Saga.
At this time, it's unclear if characters from the Star Wars sequel trilogy will make a return, such as Daisy Ridley's Rey, John Boyega's Finn, Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron, or even Adam Driver's redeemed Ben Solo or flashbacks to his time as Kylo Ren.
It seems fans will just have to wait and see!
