Brittney Griner is finally home, and one person who has an obvious cause for celebration is her wife, Cherelle, who posted about how her “heart was made whole thanks to the collective efforts of MANY.”
Brittney Griner Reunited With Wife Cherelle, Parents
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert confirmed on Thursday that Griner was on her way to San Antonio, where she reunited with her wife, Cherelle, and her parents. This family reunion comes after Griner was detained in Russian for 10 months after being arrested and imprisoned on drug charges.
Engelbert also spoke about this was a “critical time” for the athlete and her family and that, “we’re going to give her the appropriate space and time for that and then follow what Brittney and her family want to do about re-engaging with the WNBA.”
Brittney Griner’s wife Cherelle posted on Instagram yesterday and spoke about their “journey to heal” as she thanked everyone who helped her in her campaign to get Brittney home, listing out some 50 names. The couple had gotten married in 2019, and 2022 has been a tough year for them both, only now can they begin to work towards getting their life back.
This is what WNBA had to say:
After 294 days of tireless work… Our friend, sister, loved one, Brittney Griner is FREE. We love you BG 🧡 pic.twitter.com/UQ7PARbVhg

Cherelle Is Humbled By The Love For Her & Brittney Griner
In an Instagram post on Saturday, Cherelle thanked more than 50 people by name. She mentioned The Women of The View; Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin as well as Joy Reid, Gayle King, Robin Roberts, Rev. Al Sharpton, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Tamika Mallory, and three congresspeople as well.
She also thanked a few organizations like the Biden-Harris Administration, given that it was President Joe Biden‘s final nod that got her released in a one-for-one prisoner swap for international arms dealer Viktor Bout on Thursday, as per CBS News.
Wrote Cherelle in a long post accompanied by a picture collage of her and Brittney, “I’m humbled by their hearts. To care for another, a stranger to some, a friend to some— is humanity in its purest form! As BG and I start our journey to heal our minds, bodies, and spirits— I wanted to personally say thank you to some of the hands; seen and unseen, that helped make it possible for me to see my wife again!”
Cherelle Griner was able to advocate for the release of her wife’s (Brittney Griner) international incarceration less than 6 months after graduating law school!

Some on Twitter do put things into perspective, shutting down Griner’s haters:
That Brittney Griner is continuously referred to solely as a ‘WNBA’ player, and not the two-time gold medal winning Olympic champion who represented her country to the fullest and brought both pride and gold home to America, is not a coincidence…
