The popular horror movie franchise -- "Scream" -- is set to release yet another sequel. However, for the upcoming movie, the iconic character -- Sidney Prescott -- will be missing.
Neve Campbell, the actress who has played Sidney since 1996 when the first film was released, revealed that she would not be returning for the upcoming sequel due to a salary dispute.
"Scream 6" is still moving forward without Campbell, but how will the story play out? "You" and "Scream 5"actress Jenna Ortega is shedding some light on the topic.
Jenna Ortega Says Audiences Won't Wonder Where Sidney Is
Actress Jenna Ortega, who will reprise her role as Tara Carpenter in "Scream 6", recently spoke out on the upcoming sequel and even touched on how the movie will move forward without the main character -- Sidney Prescott.
"I feel like I can't really speak too much on that just because it's not necessarily my character," Ortega told Entertainment Tonight in regards to Neve Campbell's character, Sidney. "But I will say there's so much going on in this next one, that it's so action-heavy and so gore-heavy that I think you're gonna be distracted almost."
"But it's very clear, like, there's references to Sidney, of course," Ortega reassured "Scream" fans. "You know, it's nice because there's still a protectiveness in the script and that's something that the actors had naturally over her because obviously we respect her and we want the best for her. She's missed and thought of."
Although the film will be missing Campbell, fans can look forward to longtime "Scream" star Courteney Cox, who has been confirmed to return as her character, Gale Weathers, in "Scream 6."
Neve Campbell Speaks Out Regarding Salary Dispute
Earlier this year, Neve Campbell confirmed she would not return to the "Scream" franchise, despite appearing in all five other films as Sidney Prescott, due to a salary dispute.
“Sadly, I won’t be making the next Scream film. As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise,” Campbell said in a statement. “It’s been a very difficult decision to move on.”
She added, “To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”
Matthew Lillard, who played Stu in the original "Scream" film in 1996, came to Campbell's defense after the news broke.
"Did Tom Cruise take less money for [the Top Gun sequel]? F**k no dude. So why is a woman supposed to take less? Why wouldn't you pay her more as the series goes on?" Lillard said. "Was Scream 5 a hit or not a hit? It was a smash hit. Did they make a s**t ton of money? Yes."
He continued, "Should Neve Campbell be paid for the work she's done in five movies of a franchise? Yes, because she's a female lead of one of the most successful horror franchises."
"Scream 6" is currently slated to hit theaters on March 20, 2023 and will see Henry Czerny, Samara Weaving, Tony Revolori, Jack Champion, Devyn Nekoda, Liana Liberato and Josh Segarra join the franchise.
