Dermot Mulroney will be the next familiar face squaring off against Ghostface in the latest slasher flick. Mulroney is rumored to be playing a cop, which seems to cast doubt on a possible return in "Scream 7," given that cops never seem to last very long in Woodsboro.

Mulroney has been cast in many dramas since the 1980s. In addition to 1997's "My Best Friend's Wedding," he has also appeared in "The Family Stone" and "Insidious: Chapter 3."

He also had a recurring role in USA's "Hannah" and made appearances in "Arrested Development" and "The Righteous Gemstones." Mulroney most recently appeared opposite Sandra Oh in "Umma."

As THR reported, "Scream 5" grossed more than $81 million domestically and $140 million at the global box office when it was released in January.

The four young actors and actresses that managed to survive Ghostface- Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Jenna Ortega - have all been confirmed to return for "Scream 6." Courtney Cox also confirmed her return back in March.

At this time, plot details are being kept under wraps, but it's been said that the latest installment "continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter."

James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are returning to write the script. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, from the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, will be making a return as well.

On Monday, Deadline reported that Campbell, who played protagonist Sidney Prescott in the original film series and has gone up against Ghostface in every film to date, will not be appearing in the next movie due to a contract dispute.

“Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film,” she said.

“As a woman, I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream,” she continued. According to Deadline, the global franchise has grossed over $744 million dollars since it began.

She explained, “I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise.”

“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on,” she said. “To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me.”

Campbell added, “I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

An inside source told The Blast that there are going to be a lot of changes that need to be made to the script, as directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett had apparently been counting on her to return. This might delay the finished product if they need to start the script from scratch.
