Mindy Kaling Tells Jimmy Kimmel About 'Genuinely Scary Situation' She Experienced With B.J. Novak

Mindy Kaling revealed a time when she encountered a "genuinely scary situation" years ago while she was pregnant with her daughter Katherine, now 4. While on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," earlier this week, the actress tells the story of the time she went to dinner with close friend B.J. Novak and a stranger broke into Novak's car.

The two friends were headed to dinner in Los Angeles while Kaling, 43, was more than eight months pregnant with her daughter, when they encountered a man who was acting suspicious. "He parked the car and we got out of the car, I noticed there was a weird kind of guy, staring at us from the parking meter," the "Never Have I Ever" creator told Kimmel. "When we got out, he was like, 'Hey, love you guys in 'The Office'"

Kaling said the two then walked to the restaurant but found it was closed and decided to walk back to the car.  "And then we walked back to the car, and when we walk back to the car - what we think is the car - we're like, 'Oh, that's probably not it, because there's somebody sitting in the driver's seat,' and we keep walking," she recalled.

They realized that they walked too far, and turned back to his car, which Kaling said was "fancy" and locked automatically. "We go back to the car and the guy that we had talked to by the meter had gotten into B.J.'s car, was sitting in the driver's seat and had B.J.'s laptop open and was on B.J.'s laptop," the actress said. "Which is so strange - he didn't try to steal his stuff."

The two decided to confront the guy in Novak's car. Despite being pregnant, Kaling decided to block the driver's side door so he couldn't escape the situation. "My sense of justice was greater than my sense of wanting to live," Kaling said. "And then B.J. went to their side, and was like, 'What did you take?' The guy kept looking over at the door to try to get out. I was sitting there like, 'You're not going anywhere.' Finally, B.J. got his laptop back and all his stuff and he nodded to me, like, 'You can open the door and let him out.'"

Then what Kaling called the "strangest" part of the story happened. As the man was exiting the car, he said, "You guys should be careful. Anybody could just get into your car." Kaling then added with a laugh, "As though this whole thing had been like this, ruse, he had planned to teach us a valuable lesson. By the way, it did teach us that. And then he kinda wandered away."

Kaling and Novak, 43, have been friends for a long time; since they co-starred together on "The Office" in 2004. They also have a romantic past, dating on and off for a while, but remain close friends. Novak is Kaling's daughter's godfather, and the two have accompanied each other at red carpet events supporting each other along the way. Over the summer, the pair took Kaling's daughter Katherine to Griffith's Observatory for a fun night out. Kaling shared photos from the evening on her Instagram page.
