Lady Gaga Teases 'Joker 2' Casting With Musical Teaser

It seems that Lady Gaga has revealed that she's heading back to the silver screen, this time in the DC universe as she stars with Joaquin Phoenix in "The Joker." The title, “Joker: Folie à deux,” refers to a medical term for an identical mental disorder that affects multiple individuals, usually family members.

Back in June, Deadline reported that Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, was in talks with Warner Brothers to star in the musical. The teaser did not confirm what character will be playing, but fans suspect that she has been cast as Harley Quinn, Joker's former psychiatrist, in the upcoming adaption.

It will be interesting to see a new take on the character, as "Barbie" star Margot Robbie has played the role three times: in 2016’s “Suicide Squad,” 2020’s “Birds of Prey” and 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.” "The Big Bang Theory" alum Kaley Cuoco also voices the character on the HBO Max animated series “Harley Quinn,” which is now streaming its third season.

However, it should be noted that if Lady Gaga has really been cast as Harley Quinn, she will be playing the character in a completely different universe than the one Margot Robbie is in.

The Plot Of 'Joker 2' Is Still Unknown

Back in June,  “Joker” director Todd Phillips released the title and script of the upcoming sequel on social media. Philips has been working with co-writer Scott Silver for the sequel and has already presented it to the studio. Current reports from Deadline suggest that the sequel will be very different from the original.

One major way that the sequel might deviate from the first film is if it turns out to be a musical. That has yet to be confirmed, but given Lady Gaga's musical career and the animated musical teaser she posted on social media Thursday morning, it certainly seems like the film might be heading in that direction.

Although Lady Gaga contributed her singing talents to "A Star is Born," she didn't sing at all in Ridley Scott's "House of Gucci," where she starred opposite Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, and Jared Leto, who had also played the Joker in "Suicide Squad."

2019's 'Joker' Was A Major Hollywood Blockbuster

As The Blast previously reported, when “Joker” premiered in 2019, it became a box office phenomenon, grossing just over a billion dollars worldwide to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. The movie has since become the fourth highest-grossing R-rated movie in history.

The movie won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and then went on to earn eleven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor. Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance as the titular Joker, and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir won an Oscar for composing the film’s original score.
