Bella Hadid Talks About Crying Selfie

The phenomenal model recently sat down with Wall Street Journal as part of their "My Monday Morning" series, where she discussed her mental health struggles. During the interview, Hadid touched on her headline-making post in November when she shared a series of crying selfies on Instagram.

As The Blast previously reported, Hadid surprised her 48.5 million followers with a carousel of photos showing her face red and puffy from crying. She referenced a clip of Willow Smith talking about every human's struggle with anxiety and insecurity and confessed she could relate to it.

"This is pretty much my every day, every night for few years now. Social media is not real. For anyone struggling, please remember that. Sometimes all you've gotta hear is that you're not alone," Hadid wrote in a lengthy caption accompanying the emotional photos.

Now, about two months after that post, the 25-year-old shared with WSJ what prompted her to share such pictures. The IMG signed model explained:

I would have really depressive episodes and my mom or my doctor would ask how I was and instead of having to respond in text, I would just send them a photo. It was the easiest thing for me to do at the time because I was never able to explain how I was feeling.

Hadid revealed that she often found herself in "excruciating and debilitating mental and physical pain" over the past three years and couldn't understand what was happening. However, when she posted the pictures, she just wanted people feeling a similar way to know they aren't alone.

"I felt like it was just good for me to be able to speak my truth and at some point I wasn't able to post nice pretty pictures anymore. I was over it," she noted.

The IMG Model Hasn't Had A Stylist In Two Years

Hadid also discussed how her mental health struggles had affected her style and fashion sense during the sit-down. When asked by the interviewer the secret to putting together her outfit every morning, the "Private" star confessed that she hadn't had a stylist in about two years.

She disclosed that she had been "in such a weird place mentally," making it super complicated to get dressed up and leave the house, especially with the added pressure of the paparazzi.

However, she managed to get her groove back last year after coming into the understanding that her fashion should only reflect what makes her happy. "It was really important for me to learn that even if people talk about my style or if they like it or if they don't, it doesn't matter, because it's my style," Hadid added.

Now, whenever she steps out of the house, rather than ask herself if she's wearing what's trendy, she says to herself, "Does this make me happy? Do I feel good in this and do I feel comfortable?"

Hadid has since come a long way and is currently mitigating her mental health challenges better. She shared that she is much better now but understands that each day isn't the same.

I do have good days. Today is a good day. My brain fog is feeling better, I don't feel depressed. I don't have as much anxiety as I usually do.

She concluded, explaining that her candid November post did wonders as it helped her realize she isn't alone in her mental health struggles. Hadid disclosed that walking outside and knowing that many other people have "similar patterns" to her makes her "feel better."

As for whether people on Instagram want to see and accept that side of her, Hadid isn't bothered because social media isn't the real world. "I don't have to be on Instagram forever. I feel like real is the new real, and that's what's important to me," she declared.
