Selena Gomez Reveals How Body Shaming Affected Her Life

Selena Marie Gomez was born on July 22, 1992, in Grand Prairie, Texas, United States of America. Her parents, Ricardo Joel Gomez and Amanda Dawn Cornett came from Mexican and Italian ancestries. They also named her after the late Tejano singer and actress, known as Selena Quintanilla-Perez. At age five, Gomez’s parents split up, and this led her to live with her mother and two younger half-siblings. The actress and singer was home-schooled and earned a high-school diploma in 2010. Gomez was born into a financial-struggling home, and her mother who was 16-years-old at the time worked endlessly to provide for her.

Gomez once revealed that she did not like the fact that her parents were divorced and this frustrated her a lot. She was also hurt that her parents always argued with one another and struggled to give her a good life. However, she disclosed that her mother, though young, was always strong around her and did everything she could; including working three jobs, to make her comfortable as a child. The first time Gomez became engrossed with the idea of becoming an entertainment star, she watched her mother prepare for a stage event. In 2002, the actress turned singer auditioned with Demi Lovato for different roles on “Barney & Friends,” and they were selected.

Although this was the first time Gomez had been on an acting stage, she learned everything fast and was cast in thirteen episodes. In 2007, the television star got a breakout role in a Disney movie titled “Hannah Montana,” where she played the role of Mikayla. Years later, Gomez decided to venture into music as she felt like she could do wonders in the field. Her first duet was with ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber before they broke up for the first time in 2014. In the same year, the singer was diagnosed with an [inflammatory disease which weakens the immune system, known as Lupus. After escaping the worst, the actress faced condemnation from people on social media for her increased weight.

She pointed out in an interview that her body fluctuation came as a result of all the health issues she had to face, but people did not understand that about her. She also said that though she would love to have a pleasant relationship with social media, that dream was not coming to pass anytime soon. Sadly, Gomez also revealed that the comments people made on her weight messed her up and sent her to therapy. There were times when she never believed that she could come out of her shell, and the comments kept getting to her. However, she found a way to work on herself and come out strong.

After her ordeal with Lupus, Selena Gomez found out that she needed a kidney transplant, hence her return to the hospital after a short time. While the doctors were performing the transplant on her, the singer broke an artery and this resulted in emergency surgery to repair it. Although Gomez had been through a lot, health-wise and social media, she was still grateful that she had her good friends who supported her throughout. She especially appreciated her best friend, Francia Raisa, who donated a kidney to her, for saving her life. For some years now, Gomez has found her footing again in the music industry and continues to make positive progress in her life.
