Kelly Clarkson made the decision to file for divorce, after spending the last few months in COVID-19 quarantine with her estranged husband in the family's Montana ranch.

According to multiple reports, Kelly and Brandon made the decision to live in Montana during the Coronavirus outbreak hoping that the time together would help them work on their marriage.

But, instead, the time together actually made the 'situation worse' and ultimately pushed the 'Since You've Been Gone' singer to pull the trigger on filing for divorce.

"Kelly and Brandon had been having problems for several months and were making a conscious effort to work things out," a source told ET.

We're told the couple quarantined in Montana, hoping the time away from Los Angeles would be healthy for their marriage and help them iron things out.

Sadly, the constant time together actually made the already stressful situation worse, and change in the environment was actually detrimental to their relationship and ultimately ended it.

We broke the story, Kelly filed for divorce on June 4, 2020, which were told is when she left Montana and headed back to Los Angeles to face the separation situation head-on.

The time in Montana, "definitely helped to keep her mind off things, but this recent downtime gave her the time she needed to think about her life and her marriage," a source told ET.

The good news is the now ex-couple is focused on their children are dedicated to co-parenting the two young kids to the best of their ability.

In the divorce filing, Kelly Clarkson is asking a Los Angeles judge to order joint custody of the couple's two children to both her and Brandon.

She is also asking for the courts to enforce her prenuptial agreement, which most likely lays out specifics for their finances and community assets.

As we reported, friends of the 'Voice' coach are stunned by the couple's divorce, and were shocked to hear that Kelly is the one who initiated the court case.

Also, as we said, fans are devastated by the filing as well, and are sending messages like this to try and convince her to stick it out!

"You don’t need to work on top of each other. Buy some farmland in LA. Build a ranch. And then go home to your wife and kids. This woman still has starred in her eyes when she talks about you. She doesn’t want you to let her leave. She wants you to FIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY."
