Beyond Shania Twain‘s glitz and glam was a struggle no one knew about until today.
The Canadian singer and songwriter poured her heart out in a new interview, revealing that she had gone through an emotionally draining period during her 2019 Las Vegas residency.
Shania Twain is no stranger to speaking up about her troubles, frequently pushing for body positivity and embracing aging with grace.
Shania Twain Once Hated Looking At Her Reflection

Twain poured her heart out in a new interview, sharing how 2019 had been one of the most challenging moments in her life. The singer’s Las Vegas residency nearly became a tale of horror after she desperately tried to lose weight to regain her former glory.
According to Twain, her body had changed in ways she could not accept, confessing that she did not like her appearance at the time. Twain’s distaste for her own body was so bad that she could no longer stand her reflection in the mirror. She told The Times:
“I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I hated my body. I’m like, ‘Oh, I cannot stand this changing body.’ But that was so unhealthy.”
The Singer Tried To Lose Weight Using ‘Unhealthy’ Methods

Twain explained that she hadn’t done anything different in her usual routine, but her body began changing as she aged. The transformation did a number on her mental health, making Twain more conscious of her appearance and determined to lose weight.
She recalled pushing her body to the limit and doing “very unhealthy things” to regain her confidence. “I was working my body more than I was feeding it to keep up with the strain,” Twain said of her attempt to get thinner, adding that she eventually paid the price.
Twain’s actions left her body “malnourished,” which in turn caused her to suffer injuries while performing onstage. Fortunately, she no longer feels disappointed by her appearance, crediting menopause for changing her perspective and helping her understand that some things are beyond her control.
The Grammy Winner Is ‘Comfortable’ In Her Own Skin

The interview wasn’t the first time Twain had credited menopause for changing her views, previously sharing similar sentiments in 2022. At the time, she surprised fans by going topless for a new single, “Waking Up Dreaming.”
Twain addressed her decision to go topless while speaking to PEOPLE, saying, “This is me expressing my truth. I’m comfortable in my own skin, and this is the way I am sharing that confidence.” She noted that as a woman in her late 50s, she didn’t have to hide behind clothes, adding:
“I can’t even tell you how good it felt to do nude shooting. I was just so unashamed of my new body, you know, as a woman that is well into my menopause.”
The Entertainer Learned To Embrace Her Aging Body

Twain noted that it felt “liberating” after going through menopause and accepting her body’s transformation with age. She recalled being hesitant about taking her top off because her curves were no longer as “plump as they used to be.”
Such depressing thoughts did not last long on Twain’s mind as she refused to allow her confidence to dwindle. She remembered thinking that she should not allow her courage to dull and chose to embrace her aging body. These thoughts pushed Twain to go topless for her single’s cover art.
“I’m not going to be shy about it. I want to be courageous about it, and I want to share that courage in the artwork that I am directing,” Twain said. She has always chosen bold ideas for her music, going bra-less and baring her midriff for her debut music video “What Made You Say That” in 1993.
Shania Twain Revealed Her Childhood Trauma

Besides opening up about her body image issues, Twain has been vocal about her dark past. The Blast reported in March 2025 that Twain had shared how her body image issues were connected to her childhood trauma.
The “You’re Still the One” hitmaker confessed that she felt insecure about her body from a young age because she had been “touched inappropriately so many times.” Twain claimed she had been in many abusive situations, which in turn led to her hating herself for being a woman.
Twain confessed that she even had thoughts of becoming a “big, strong man that nobody was going to f-ck around with,” and told her mom of her plans to become a bodybuilder as a child. She also recalled hating her curvy body because she grew up at a time when being “very, very thin” was associated with “elegance and feminine beauty.”
