Several artists have pulled out of the Donald Trump-backed Freedom 250 “Great American State Fair” shortly after the lineup was announced, citing concerns over undisclosed political ties.

While organizers claim the event is non-partisan and meant to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, withdrawals from acts like Morris Day, Young MC, and now rock star Bret Michaels have fueled attention.

Although some performers remain scheduled, questions around the Donald Trump-backed event’s positioning and transparency continue to grow ahead of its June launch.

A wave of artists has already pulled out of the upcoming “Great American State Fair,” an event tied to President Donald Trump–backed Freedom 250, just a day after the initial lineup was revealed.

Several performers say they were unaware of the event’s political links when they were first associated with it, while organizers maintain the celebration is meant to bring Americans together ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Freedom 250 spokesperson Rachel Reisner told USA Today on May 28 that the initiative is “dedicated to uniting Americans around the nation’s 250th anniversary,” adding that the focus remains on inclusive, patriotic celebrations that “uplift and unite” the country.

Despite that messaging, multiple acts have since pulled out of the lineup scheduled for June 25 to July 10.

Morris Day and Young MC were among the first to step away on May 27. Day made his decision public in a brief Instagram post, simply stating, “It’s A No For Me,” without offering further explanation.

Young MC later said on Facebook that he had instructed his team to remove him from the event after learning more about its political associations, noting that the “artists were never told about any political involvement with the event.”

Milli Vanilli, The Commodores, And Martina McBride Withdraw From Freedom 250 Lineup Over Political Concerns

R&B group Milli Vanilli also exited the lineup, with Jodie Rocco telling The Associated Press that the group was surprised to even see their name included, adding that they had not been formally approached about performing.

The Commodores confirmed their withdrawal as well, stating in a social media post that they would not be participating. The group emphasized that their music has always aimed to connect broadly with audiences and that they prefer not to align with any political affiliation.

Country singer Martina McBride, originally scheduled for June 25, also stepped away on May 28. In a post on X, she said she had been led to believe the event was “non-partisan” and comparable to traditional state fairs.

She added that recent developments changed her understanding of the event’s direction, prompting her decision to pull out.

McBride further explained that she was concerned about how the situation might be perceived by fans, noting that she never intended for her involvement to be seen as a departure from the values reflected in her music, and expressing appreciation for ongoing fan support while hoping to return to the D.C. area in the future.

Bret Michaels Has Also Dropped Out Of The Festival

Bret Michaels, who was initially scheduled to perform on July 3, has now pulled out of the event.

The famous rock music singer shared a lengthy post on Instagram about his decision, noting that things have taken a turn for the negative and the festival has become “divisive.”

“Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of,” Michaels shared.

Michaels also highlighted that fan safety was a major reason why he has chosen to no longer be a part of the show.

“Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family, and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable,” he stated.

Despite the sudden shake-up over perceived political affiliations, a number of artists remain on the roster.

C+C Music Factory is still scheduled to perform on June 26, alongside Vanilla Ice, while Flo Rida is set for July 2.

The lineup has also drawn attention due to internal differences within C+C Music Factory.

Frontman Freedom Williams shared a post online suggesting he initially considered withdrawing over concerns about the event’s political connections, but ultimately decided to stay on, describing his choice as a personal stance against public pressure.

The festival itself is scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10 and is being coordinated by Freedom 250, a nonprofit linked to planning America’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

The organization has outlined a broader slate of events planned in Washington, D.C., including World Cup viewing events, an IndyCar race, and a sports competition for high school athletes.

Federal Review Flags Cost Overruns And Delays In Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Renovation Project

Meanwhile, a separate federal review has raised concerns about the cost and progress of renovation work on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., a project tied to broader preparations for the United States’ 250th anniversary celebrations.

As reported by The Blast, an analysis by the National Park Service, the contractor awarded the job, Atlantic Industrial Coatings, is operating with an estimated profit margin of around 20%, well above the typical 6% to 12% range for comparable federal construction projects. That difference is said to add roughly $850,000 to the overall contract value.

The total approved contract is valued at approximately $13.1 million. Officials reportedly defended the decision, citing the urgency of completing the project within a tight timeline.

However, this figure is significantly higher than earlier public estimates from Donald Trump, who had previously suggested the renovation would cost between $1.5 million and $2 million.

Despite work being underway, reports indicate the project has encountered technical setbacks.

Contractors have struggled to seal long-standing gaps between concrete slabs at the bottom of the reflecting pool, and early attempts to fix persistent leaks were unsuccessful.

As a result, both the contractor and federal officials are reportedly exploring alternative repair approaches.
