Melania Trump is facing backlash online after publishing a Mother’s Day essay that critics are calling “out of touch” and “ignorant.” The first lady shared the opinion piece on May 8 under the title “Mothers Are America’s Strength,” and social media users were quick to react, calling the essay “out of touch” and “condescending.”

In the essay, Melania praised motherhood and described moms as the foundation of American families. “A mother’s devotion to her child is unmatched,” she wrote, later calling mothers their children’s “first teachers of empathy, aspiration, and discipline.”

“America’s strength is closely tied to the role mothers play in shaping character, education, and moral order within families,” she wrote. “From morning until night, mothers serve as the first teachers of empathy, aspiration, and discipline. It is mothers who do so much to shape a child’s mind, how to think, how to distinguish right from wrong, and how to persevere in challenging times.”

She also argued that women can successfully balance parenting and professional careers, writing, “Yes, women can thrive in both motherhood and business, but let’s be honest, extended families and strong support systems are often essential to providing a solid base for success. That’s why I admire the strength and dedication of single mothers in America, who often handle these responsibilities alone.”

While some supporters applauded the message, others blasted the first lady almost immediately after the article began circulating online. “As usual: ignorant, out of touch, and condescending,” one critic wrote on X. The commenter also referenced economic struggles facing many American families during President Donald Trump’s administration.

Another social media user harshly criticized the Trump family while reacting to the op-ed. “This op-ed belongs with the debris of your old office, The East Wing,” the person wrote, calling the family “crooks” and “hypocrites.” “The Trump family has no clue about traditional family values.”

Others accused Melania of lacking authenticity while discussing family values publicly. “You don’t know anything about joining hands, hugs, kisses, role model, and good influence!!!!” another commenter posted.

Despite the backlash, many supporters defended Melania and praised both her message and her role as first lady. “Yes, I agree. Mothers are important, so if you are one, try to be the best you can be. I know I did,” one supporter wrote online. Another added, “Happy Mother’s Day to our lovely First Lady, Melania. She is strong, loyal, intelligent, and graceful. And her beauty comes from within.”

Melania has been married to President Donald Trump since 2005, and the couple shares 20-year-old son Barron Trump. The president is also father to four additional children from his previous marriages to Ivana Trump and Marla Maples.

In her Mother’s Day post on social media, Melania also became deeply personal while reflecting on the emotional connection between mothers and their children. Speaking about motherhood ahead of the holiday, the first lady described the bond between mother and child as something uniquely powerful.

“A mother is awestruck when she welcomes her child into the world,” Melania wrote. “After nine months, the miracle of life creates a fascinating bond between mother and child with each breath. Day by day, this bond deepens, bringing forth emotions never felt before.”

Melania also emphasized that she believes the connection between a mother and child is difficult to fully explain. “Only a mother can carry this type of powerful connection with her child, which is also too profound for words,” she added.

Ahead of President Donald Trump’s second term, Melania opened up about her parenting philosophy during an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” explaining that she believes children should first be guided before eventually gaining independence. “We teach them, we guide them, and then we give them the wings to fly,” Melania said at the time.

During the interview, the first lady also revealed she planned to divide her time between the White House and New York while supporting her son Barron Trump’s education. Barron was previously attending classes at New York University’s main campus in New York City, though reports have since claimed he transferred to NYU’s Washington, D.C. campus.

Melania reiterated the importance of family and motherhood in her recent essay as well. “My first priority is … to be a mom, to be a first lady, to be a wife,” she wrote.

She also argued that modern culture has shifted away from valuing motherhood, adding, “America can restore the honor of motherhood after years in which feminism often placed career above family, with consequences to our nation.”
