Jackie had an exclusive chat with PEOPLE Magazine to promote his new movie, “Karate Kid: Legends,” which hit theaters on May 30.

In a rare and personal moment during the interview, the inspirational actor revealed that his late mother, Lee Lee Chan, couldn’t bring herself to sit through any of his action-packed movies.

While most viewers can’t get enough of his thrilling stunts and wild fight scenes, Jackie’s mom found them emotionally distressing, to the point where she would stop watching within minutes.

“My mom never watched the whole of one of my movies. She started the movie, starts at the beginning, maybe the credits. But when she sees I’m doing a stunt, she turns around,” he told the publication.

The 71-year-old continued speaking of his mom, who was 86 when she died, noting that she didn’t want to see when he hit someone or when someone hit him. “She never watched a whole movie,” he added.

However, though Lee Lee couldn’t bear to sit through any of her son’s movies, she was still incredibly proud of the Hollywood star.

Jackie Chan recalled that his mother would keep his movie posters near her bed and kiss them goodnight, showing her support in the most heartfelt way.

“She had all my posters. She touched and kissed them before sleeping. That’s my mom,” he said.

Unfortunately, Lee Lee couldn’t live much longer to see her son achieve even more success. She passed away on February 28, 2002, in Canberra, Australia.

Jackie Says He Was A 'Naughty' Child

Elsewhere during the chat, Jackie Chan shared that he wasn’t always the polished, disciplined martial artist everyone sees today. He admitted to being a difficult child who frequently got into trouble.

“[As a child, I was] very naughty. Very naughty, I never go to school. All the books in my backpack? I always throw them away,” Jackie recalled.

His parents struggled to discipline him and eventually enrolled him in the China Drama Academy, a grueling training school where he spent years learning acrobatics, martial arts, and performance.

Thankfully, the tough training paid off. At school, he was scouted and eventually became a stuntman in his teenage years and twenties.

Jackie would also go on to become a stunt coordinator and director in Asia.

Jackie Chan Talks About Unity Through Movies

In 1995, Jackie landed his first Hollywood role in “Rumble in The Bronx,” and since then, he has maintained his status as one of the most revered actors in Hollywood.

In February 2025, he appeared at the Critics' Choice Awards, receiving a standing ovation.

While handing out the award for Best Foreign Film, Jackie delivered a moving message about unity through movies.

“Tonight, we're celebrating movies. They remind us that we may be from all different parts of the world, different walks of life, but we all laugh and cry and eat too much popcorn in the same way,” the actor said.
