Jhené Aiko wants to keep her confession under wraps in the ongoing car crash case.
The star has petitioned the court to stop the release of her recorded deposition to the public in her verbal abuse case against a lawyer representing the victim of an alleged car crash involving the singer.
Jhené Aiko was sued by Genelle Ligot over an alleged car accident. She has, however, denied her involvement in the incident.
Jhené Aiko Objected To Be Recorded Due To Her Famous Status
The singer claimed in her lawsuit that she was insulted and mocked by the attorney representing the victim of the alleged car accident in 2022.
Now, Aiko wants to keep her account of events under wraps and has asked the judge to issue an order blocking the release of her video deposition.
The star was sued in February by Ligot and is now at a war of words over the terms of Aiko's deposition. She claimed Ligot served her a notice of deposition in September.
Aiko said she disagreed with the location of the deposition, "which intended [Jhené] to be physically present at [Genelle's] counsel's law firm on the grounds that [Jhené] is not claiming any injury from the [crash] therefore, there is no need for [her] to be physically in person at the deposition."
In Touch shared that Aiko objected to the deposition being videotapeddue to her being famous. The singer claimed Ligot's lawyer responded to her objection and insisted that:
"They are entitled to a deposition of your client in our office and we are well within our rights to videotape the deposition … celebrities don't get special treatment."
The Songwriter's Legal Team Could Not Reach Agreement With The Plaintiff's Rep
The artist's lawyer asked the opposing counsel if they would commit to not releasing the videos to third parties, including the media, and destroy the clips after the case.
The victim's lawyer then replied, writing, "[If] your client is such a critically acclaimed artist with so many accolades, then why is she driving around with $50,000 of insurance coverage?"
But Aiko's lawyer insisted they tried to talk to Ligot lawyers but they only gave "additional insults that mocked [Jhené's] achievements." They quoted an email they received from Ligot's lawyer, and it read:
"[y]our client can't claim she is a celebrity of high status, while simultaneously maintaining a $50,000 insurance policy. If your client wishes to protect her alleged 'celebrity status' and her 'accolades' then she can make a good faith offer to settle this matter short of extensive litigation…Otherwise you can file your motion…"
Ligot's attorney emphasized that Aiko was irresponsible with her conduct but "yet wishes to use her 'celebrity' status to protect her, but at the same time fails to take the actions that would be consistent with her 'celebrity' status – i.e. getting insurance coverage that would match her alleged fame and fortune."
The singer's lawyer added that the victim's legal team wrote to them again on October 28, "Your client can't use her 'celebrity' status as a sword when she has a $50,000 policy – no judge is going for that."
The singer's lawyer said they clarified to Ligot's team that the singer never refused to appear for a deposition but only wanted to protect herself and the video from leaking.
Her lawyer added, "The public disclosure and dissemination of Defendant's deposition testimony would serve no purpose other than to harass and cause unnecessary embarrassment."
Ligot Claimed The 'Post To Be' Singer Rear-Ended Her At A Traffic Stop
In the lawsuit, Ligot claimed that the incident happened in July 2022 at the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Hayvenhurst Avenue in Encino, California. The Blast gathered that Aiko "struck her" vehicle from behind while waiting at a traffic light, and Ligot blamed it on her carelessness.
"[Ligot] was stopped at a traffic light when [Aiko] struck [her] from behind. Due to the negligent actions of [Aiko] while operating the motor vehicle, [Ligot] was injured in health, strength, and activity," she declared in her filing.
The accident has caused Ligot to suffer "wage loss, loss of use of property, hospital and medical expenses, general damage, property damage and loss of earning capacity."
The Mom-of-two Accused The Alleged Victim Of Refusing To Follow Safety Protocols While Driving
Aiko denied all allegations of wrongdoing filed in the lawsuit and responded that Ligot was barred from seeking damages due to their negligence, which contributed to their injuries and damages.
The singer accused Ligot of being uninsured on the date in question. She also claimed the alleged victim was "negligent" because she "failed to wear a seat belt, which would have avoided or made less severe [Genelle's] alleged injuries and damages."
The R&B singer demanded that the entire lawsuit be dismissed and that her accuser not be awarded any settlement.
Jhené Aiko And Big Sean Obtained A Restraining Order Against Stalker Last Year
Last year, The Blast reported that the couple headed to court in August to ask for a restraining order against a 29-year-old man after Aiko "feared for her life."
The man reportedly showed up to multiple events and concerts they attended. The duo had enough when the stalker broke into Big Sean and Jhené Aiko's home, where they live with their infant son and 14-year-old daughter.
The infiltration even allegedly resulted in a confrontation between the 29-year-old stalker and Big Sean's neighbor's security team.
Which way will Jhené Aiko's lawsuit swing?
