Chris Martin Puts A Cap On Coldplay's Number Of Albums As A Band

Chris Martin has decided on Coldplay's future discography, revealing that the band plans to release only twelve "proper albums" before shifting gears. 

This bold declaration comes as the iconic band continues to enjoy immense success. Their vast catalog of music has allowed them to tour extensively across the globe.

Chris Martin's comments signal a transformative phase for the band as they prepare for the next chapter in their illustrious career.

In a recent interview, Coldplay's frontman highlighted the band's dedication to prioritizing quality over quantity, declaring, "We're only going to do 12 proper albums, and that's real."

Martin shared with Zane Lowe that this decision marks the band's plan to cap their discography before stepping away from releasing new material. 

Despite Lowe's enthusiasm for a more extensive catalog, suggesting he would love to see "50 albums," Martin stood firm, asserting, "You don't, because less is more. And for some of our critics, even less would be even more."

PEOPLE reports that he elaborated on the significance of this limit, drawing parallels with beloved series like Harry Potter and legendary artists like The Beatles and Bob Marley.

"Having that limit means that the quality control is so high right now," he explained, emphasizing that for a song to be included in their collection, it has to be truly exceptional.

The 47-year-old made it clear that Coldplay is not looking to "coast" at this stage in its career; instead, it is focused on improvement and innovation. 

Apart from preferring quality over quantity, Martin opened up further about the decision to retire the band from album-making.

He pointed out the emotional and logistical toll it takes to create a "great" project. The father-of-two added, "It's such a lot of wrangling of people, and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves."

Despite this, Coldplay is still thriving both in the studio and on tour. Martin hinted that while Coldplay's album-making days are numbered, his passion for creating music will continue in other ways. In his words:

"I don't know where the songs come from. I don't know where the ideas come from, but that's just been coming to me for about four or five years now. Like, 'You have to finish like this,' and I trust that just like I trust the songs."

While fans may be disappointed, Martin suggested that future collaborations could take a different form.

The band's catalog of hits is more than enough to pack stadiums, even if they decide to stop releasing new music. Their ongoing success was evident last year when the band had to extend their world tour into 2024 due to overwhelming demand.

The Blast reported that Coldplay's spectacular 2023 tour, which wrapped up with a show-stopping performance in Amsterdam, prompted them to add another European leg, set to run from June to August 2024. 

The extension was set to bring the British band to new locations for the first time, including Finland, Greece, and Romania. Longtime fans in Rome and Budapest would also get to see the band again, as Coldplay planned to return to these cities for the first time since 2003 and 2008, respectively.

Coldplay was expected to perform on the 2024 tour in iconic cities like Athens, Budapest, Düsseldorf, Rome, Helsinki, Dublin, Vienna, and Munich.

Fans will not be surprised to hear that Coldplay is capping their discography. In fact, last year's announcement of new 2024 tour dates was expected to boost spirits, especially after Martin revealed the band's plans. 

Tickets for the new shows were to go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. local time on Friday, July 28th. However, dedicated fans could secure their spots early by registering on Coldplay's website, allowing them access to a special pre-sale starting Tuesday, July 25th.

Before embarking on the 2024 European leg, Coldplay had already taken their vast collection of hits around the globe, thrilling audiences in North America, Tokyo, Jakarta, Kaohsiung, Kuala Lumpur, Perth, Singapore, Manila, and Bangkok.

Just a month after delighting fans with new 2024 tour dates, the band found themselves entangled in legal drama. Known for hits like "Viva La Vida," they reportedly clashed with their former manager a year after parting ways.

According to legal documents filed in the U.K., the ex-manager, Dave Holmes, took legal action against the band, sparking a bitter dispute. The Blast noted that Coldplay quietly ended their relationship with Holmes 12 months prior, after over a decade of working together.

Although the band member's representatives remained tight-lipped about the specifics, insiders hinted that the fallout centers around a "contractual dispute."
