The breakup season has claimed another victim, with Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson ending their 7-year romance.
The Coldplay frontman and the "Madame Web" actress won't be walking down the aisle after reportedly ending their love story over contradicting commitments. Their breakup comes five months after their engagement made waves in March.
Like their plan to get married, Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson have mostly kept their relationship private. They first sparked dating speculations in 2017 and were last seen enjoying a trip to Mexico in February.
Update: Chris Martin And Dakota Johnson Still Going Strong
Contrary to initial reports about Martin and Johnson's relationship, a rep for the actress recently confirmed the breakup speculations are false. The insider assured TMZ their engagement is still ongoing, and they are living their best lives.
Johnson's rep stressed that the couple had zero issues balancing their personal and work lives, with the TV personality proudly supporting Martin at his Coldplay's Helsinki show two weeks earlier.
The duo also showed perfect harmony with Martin's new "Feels Like I'm Falling in Love" video produced by Johnson's TeaTime Pictures. These sweet moments proved the pair are still couple goals despite the absence of the actress' engagement ring.
The Couple Were Said To Be Over
News of Martin and Johnson's breakup came via sources, who claimed the pair struggled to keep their relationship afloat. They ended their engagement and, ultimately, their romance after allegedly "drifting apart" for months.
Reports claimed the "We Pray" singer, currently on tour with his band, has allegedly "accepted the relationship is over - and it's best to move on." An insider claimed the split was permanent, saying:
"Chris and Dakota have tried desperately hard over the past few months to make their relationship work."
"They'll always have love for each other, but they've both come to the conclusion the relationship cannot be sustained long-term," the source added, per Daily Mail.
Martin And Johnson Reportedly Wanted Their Relationship To Work
The source stressed that Martin and Johnson's romance ended over their contradicting commitments and hectic schedules. "They're both busy people," they explained, noting:
"Chris has been in Europe with Coldplay, and they both have personal priorities, passions, and work commitments which don't naturally intertwine with each other."
"They wanted it to work, but it just hasn't, and they've now accepted it is best to move on," the insider concluded. Johnson seemingly hinted at their breakup last weekend during a stroll with her dog.
She was photographed in a black sports bra and matching shorts as she walked her dog in Malibu, where she used to live with Martin. However, the actress stepped out without her emerald engagement ring.
The Couple Briefly Separated In 2019
Martin and Johnson allegedly went down the breakup route in 2019, with sources claiming the singer sparked their brief separation. The Coldplay frontman was pushing for children, a notion his then-girlfriend seemingly wasn't ready for.
However, the pair reconciled and dodged breakup rumors until May 2024, when Martin was spotted giving a lift to a female fan. The woman fueled the split speculations by claiming he was "single" on X.
A source refuted the rumors in June, confirming Martin and Johnson were still 'going strong,' saying, "They've had ups and downs, but now they're definitely back on."
The pair were last seen looking head over heels for each other in February during a romantic getaway to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Photos showed them spending quality time at the beach, holding hands, and enjoying the water.
Martin's Ex-Wife Approved His Engagement To Johnson
Five months before their split, The Blast reported that Martin and Johnson had secretly engaged. Because of their low-key stance, news of the next step in their relationship didn't break until March.
It was unclear when Martin popped the big question; however, a source claimed he didn't make the move without the approval of his ex-wife and their two children. The singer was previously married to actress Gwyneth Paltrow from 2003 to 2014.
"The couple got engaged a while ago and have kept the news private. But now they are being open about it with their circles," the insider revealed. They claimed the pair's engagement wasn't surprising given their immense love for each other.
Dakota Johnson Seemingly Wanted Kids With Chris Martin
News of Johnson and Martin's engagement came at the heels of the actress' desire for children. She disclosed her interest in motherhood in an interview, raving about her love for her then-fiancé's children with Paltrow.
"I love those kids like my life depends on it. With all my heart," she said about Martin's two kids — daughter Apple and son Moses — adding:
"How do I feel about motherhood? I'm so open to that. I've gotten to this place where I really want to experience everything life has to offer."
Unfortunately, Dakota Johnson's baby-making dreams won't become a reality with Chris Martin.
