Hollywood legend Jane Fonda reportedly warned Jennifer Lopez about adapting her romance with Ben Affleck into a film, which the singer did in her "The Greatest Love Story Never Told" music documentary.
The couple was cautioned because of concerns that they were trying hard to "prove something" about their rekindled romance.
Two years into their marriage, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez's relationship seems to be on the rocks, with divorce rumors plaguing the couple.
Jane Fonda Shared Her Concerns With Jennifer Lopez
Fonda cautioned Lopez about adapting her love story with Affleck into a film.
The actress reportedly warned the singer about the staying power of their relationship after spending almost two decades apart.
Fonda said, "First of all, I want you to know that I don't entirely know why, but I feel invested in you and Ben, and I really, really want this to work. However, this is my concern. Like it feels too much like you're trying to prove something instead of just living it. Every other photograph is the two of you kissing or the two of you hugging."
Fonda expressed concern to Lopez when the singer approached her to star in her music documentary, "The Greatest Love Story Never Told."
According to the Daily Mail, the 90-minute film features a phone call during which Fonda shares the reasons for her reservation. It was released in February and is one part of a three-part project on her breakup and reunion with Affleck.
Fonda and Lopez first met while filming their 2005 romcom "Monster-in-Law."
Jane Fonda Was Worried After Their Infamous Grammy Awards Clip
After Lopez persuaded her, Fonda finally accepted a cameo role in the documentary. But after that, the "Grace & Frankie" actress admitted that the infamous footage of Lopez seemingly scolding Affleck for looking bored at the Grammys in March 2023 gave her serious concerns.
She said, "I got real scared, you know, with all that sh-t about the Grammys, and he looks unhappy and I'm like, 'Oh, my God, what's happening?'"
In response, Lopez laughed and said, "Nothing! He was like, 'I've become the symbol of the beleaguered man.'"
Lopez further explained that they're trying to accept each other despite their differences. She added, "It's sort of like you're going to marry a boat captain and you go, 'Well I don't like the water.' We're just two people with different approaches trying to learn to compromise."
Jennifer Lopez And Ben Affleck's Marriage Is In Jeopardy
With Fonda's warning in hindsight, Lopez and Affleck are already the subject of many divorce rumors.
The "Deep Water" actor has reportedly moved out of their $60 million Los Angeles home, while Lopez still lives there. The house is also reportedly back on the market, and the couple is house hunting separately.
Lopez recently posted a Father's Day tribute to Affleck on Instagram, calling him "Our Hero," but it's unclear if they spent the day together.
The "Marry Me" actress was spotted visiting him on Saturday, while Affleck's ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, was seen visiting him on Sunday.
As Fonda pointed out, pictures of Affleck and Lopez holding hands, kissing, and hugging publicly have disappeared as the rumors have heightened.
Recent pictures of them together also show the couple with tense body language and miserable expressions on Affleck's face.
Ben Affleck Compared Their Different Approaches To Publicity
Affleck previously reflected on the differences between him and Lopez, especially regarding the publicity of their romance.
The "Gone Girl" actor compared the "On The Floor" singer's "addiction" to social media to his own alcohol addiction problems.
He said, "Jen felt emotionally neglected as a child. We are learning more and more that it doesn't have to be the kind of trauma of being locked in a basement for years to leave wounds on you. It's a hard thing to look at somebody whose professional life is wildly successful and who on Instagram looks like they're living the happiest life in the world."
Affleck further explained that for both of them, alcohol and social media validation isn't enough to fill "that part of you that still feels a longing and a pain." He added, "That's the work that you've got to do on your own" to feel that satisfaction and be fulfilled in yourself.
The Couple No Longer Has The 'Look of Love'
Amid reports of an "imminent" divorce, an expert, Judi James, spoke about the couple's body language at Affleck's daughter Violet's graduation ceremony in Los Angeles.
James told the Daily Mail that despite the couple holding hands "in a traditionally intimate gesture of affection and togetherness," their facial expressions showed that something was amiss.
According to her, the duo did not have a "look of love" in their eyes when they looked at each other but instead chose to share only "frosty" looks.
The body language expert said, "A couple in love will do 'the look of love' when they gaze at each other. It involves a dramatic softening of the muscles of the face and a warm eye-smile."
She added, "But here it looks as though Ben and Jennifer's face remain switched onto 'frosty,' despite their eye contact."
