On January 13, 2024, hundreds of fans gathered at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City to watch the Chiefs dominate the Dolphins in a 26-7 playoff win. However, it now turns out it was a literal sacrifice for many of the fans to watch the victorious game.

Due to the frostbite suffered by many of the attendees, the medical director at the Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center in Kansas City has advised amputations. The doctors are reportedly recommending amputations for about 70% of patients who came into the Grossman Burn Center with frostbite, while the other 30% will spend weeks in hyperbaric oxygen tanks.

Per TMZ, one of the victims includes a diehard Chiefs fan who took off his gloves for just 5 minutes to put up a tent in the parking lot. Recall that the Chiefs faced off with the Dolphins in a jarring temperature of -4 degrees Fahrenheit (minus-20 Celsius), and wind gusts up to 27 mph made for a wind chill of -27 degrees.

It was so intense that star Chiefs player Patrick Mahomes' helmet broke into pieces when he was hit, and coach Andy Reid had a frozen mustache. The January 13 game made records for being the coldest game ever played in Arrowhead Stadium since 1983.

It also emerged as the fourth coldest in NFL history, with the coldest game—the 1967 NFL championship—having a temperature of -13 Fahrenheit and a wind chill of minus-48 degrees.
