Anne Hathaway's 'Condescending' Fan Interaction Sparks Debate

Anne Hathaway's interaction with a crowd of fans has sparked a debate online, with some calling the actress "rude" and "condescending."
The video, which is from 2022, is once again making its rounds on social media, and is causing an uproar amongst users.
The actress, who is best known for her roles in 'The Princess Diaries'and 'The Devil Wears Prada', was seen addressing a crowd of fans as she was getting ready to leave in her stretch limo. So what's the problem? Well, some are accusing Hathaway of handling the situation poorly due to her hand gestures and her tone of voice.
Fans Debate Over Anne Hathaway's Behavior In Now-Viral Video
The 'Devil Wears Prada' actress was seen dealing with a disorderly crowd, telling the fans to “calm” down, in Italian, while placing her hand out in front of her, gesturing for them to quiet down.
“I cannot take photos with everyone,” Hathaway is heard saying in the video. “But I will stand here and wave if you would like to take a photo. I cannot sign; there are too many of you.”
“Mi dispiace [I’m sorry] but I want you to have something so if you’d like I’ll just wave a little bit," she repeated before thanking the crowd "for understanding.”
After watching how Hathaway handled the crowd of fans, who were heard yelling and screaming at the now 41-year-old, many social media users are slamming the actress for being "condescending."
"With how long she took to be condescending, she could possibly have signed and took the photos," one user expressed, adding, "She was being unnecessary."
Another wrote, "Is ‘condescending’ an option?"

Users continued to slam the actress after seeing her fan interaction, as one X user said, "Rude and fake polite at the same time."
Another claimed that they heard Hathaway "is 'not very 'cool' in real life."
Others, however, had the 'Devil Wears Prada' actress's back, saying she handled the situation with grace and was very "polite."
"No — she was more than generous and sweet," one of Hathaway's fans said.

Another social media user had the 41-year-old actress's back as they wrote, "Very polite; she has no obligation to even hold for a photo. I know people are excited, but they also need to be mindful that celebrities are people too with personal lives."
That same user added, "Like she said, there are too many, and she couldn't possibly pose or sign for all."
While another user said they "respect" the actress, claiming "she is extremely polite and setting up boundaries" in the video. "I can respect that. And that’s the best way to control the situation," they added.
Anne Hathaway is no stranger to online hate. In 2013, “Everyone hates Anne Hathaway” articles took over the internet - the same year the actress won a Golden Globe and Oscar for her role in 'Les Misérables'.
