Jim Carrey's Withdrawal From Spotlight Causes 'Big Worry' For His Close Friends

Jim Carrey's retreat from the limelight since his Hollywood retirement has reportedly sparked concern among his friends. The once-vibrant entertainer, who ditched his Hollywood career in 2022 to focus on becoming an artist, is now allegedly a shadow of himself and has since opted to self-isolate.

Following a rare sighting for his 62nd birthday celebration early this month, Carrey was seen looking unkempt and unrecognizable which has prompted friends to rise to the occasion and offer their support. His failed relationships over the years are also alleged to have taken a toll on him.

The “Dumb and Dumber” star, known for his infectious energy and comedic prowess, has reportedly caused concerns among his close pals as he continues to adopt a reclusive lifestyle, leaving them to wonder about his well-being.

In a rare sighting for his 62nd birthday on January 5th, Carrey was seen looking disheveled and unrecognizable, prompting friends to rally around him to lift his spirits.

A source told the National Enquirer (via Radar Online) that the comedian has been spending time in Hawaii and is “hiding away and showing very little interest in anything Hollywood has to offer.”

“It's a big worry for the many folks who care about Jim, who's had some seriously rough moments these past few years," the insider continued, adding that Carrey "tends to self-isolate and lock himself away."

The former actor’s appearance prompted the insider to note that Carrey has seemingly “taken a beating, both physically and mentally."

According to Radar Online, a source disclosed that the Hollywood icon has faced considerable challenges on the romantic front, especially as he’s had to endure the hardships of two divorces.

Carrey’s first marriage to actress Melissa Womer ended in divorce in 1995. He then walked down the aisle once again in September 1996 with actress Lauren Holly, two years after meeting on the set of “Dumb & Dumber,” but that union also ended in divorce in July 1997, with Holly citing "irreconcilable differences."

More recently, Carrey has endured a broken engagement with Renée Zellweger, as well as other flings with female pals, including Cathriona White, who committed suicide in 2015. His relationship with Ginger Gonzaga also hit the rocks in 2019.

"Essentially, he's been single ever since and prefers a solitary life away from the limelight working on his painting," the source told the news outlet. "He has no plans to return to movies, but friends are still trying to cheer him up. He's such a vulnerable soul!"

The concerns from friends for his well-being come after the “Ace Ventura” star ditched his Hollywood career as an actor-comedian to focus on becoming an artist.

In March 2022, Carrey announced to "Access Hollywood" that he was “probably” retiring from acting.

“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” he shared. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

Carrey added, “I feel like - and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists - I have enough. I've done enough. I am enough.”

In a move to signal that he’s “fairly serious” about ditching his Hollywood career, Carrey put his sprawling Los Angeles home, his residence for over three decades, on the market for a hefty sum of nearly $29 million last February, per Radar Online.

The luxurious residence, nestled in the exclusive Brentwood neighborhood, has been a staple of Carrey's life since he acquired it in the early 1990s. The stunning property spans over 12,700 square feet and features a sprawling five-bedroom, bathrooms, and panoramic views of the city as it sits on more than 280 feet of hedged frontage.

Once referred to as his “sanctuary,” Carrey purchased the sprawling property in 1994 for $3.8 million, which features a custom art deco theater with mohair-covered sofas, burl wood columns, a snack area, and a pool with a waterfall and a jacuzzi.
