Selena Gomez has been tapped to portray Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic, a decision that Ronstadt reportedly signed off on personally.
As you may know, Ronstadt, who is an 11-time Grammy winner and one of the most iconic singers of all time, officially retired from singing in 2012 following her Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis. She is now 77 years of age.
Selena Gomez Lands The Role Of Linda Ronstadt In Upcoming Film
The 77-year-old retired singer recently spoke out about what influenced her over her career, crediting her father who introduced her to many different artists, but Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra are the two who really stood out.
“My dad bought lots of records home,” Ronstadt in an interview last year. “I remember being enchanted by Billie Holiday. She invented pop music and the things we all later did. She made music so intimate. She and Frank Sinatra are the two biggest influences on popular singing in the 20th century. I tried to do what they did.”
Now, her story will be told in an upcoming biopic, starring singer and actress Selena Gomez.
The upcoming film is currently in pre-production, with Ronstadt’s manager John Boylan, and James Keach, known for his work on the “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice” documentary, both tapped to co-produce the project.
According to reports, Ronstadt, who is now 77 years old, personally signed off on Selena Gomez to portray her in the upcoming untitled biopic. The two are both of Mexican heritage and have previously met with one another to discuss the project before the news was announced.
Many say there are similarities in their music, both having extremely unique voices and success within the industry. Ronstadt’s official Facebook and Instagram social media accounts shared the news about the upcoming movie, writing, “It all started with a simple dream.”
Just hours before the news broke of Selena Gomez being tapped to portray Linda Ronstadt in the upcoming movie, the 'Love You Like A Love Song' singer shared a photo of Ronstadt’s 2013 memoir, 'Simple Dreams', to her Instagram Stories, seemingly teasing the big announcement.
The announcement comes amid the 'Only Murders In The Building' actress saying she is taking a "break" from social media to focus on "what matters." One being her boyfriend, Benny Blanco.
The break from social media comes after Selena Gomez was caught up in a gossip rumor at the 2024 Golden Globes as many thought Selena told her BFF Taylor Swiftsomething about Kylie Jenner, and Timothée Chalamet.
Linda Ronstadt Over The Years
The now-retired singer has released 24 studio albums and is best known for her number 1 hit 'You’re No Good.'
Before she got her big break, when she was just a teenager, Ronstadt describes meeting one of the biggest guitarists of the 1960s -- Ry Cooder.
“Ry Cooder was the first guitar player I heard when I moved to Los Angeles when I was 18,” she said at the time of meeting the guitar legend. “He was so good. I thought that if they had such good players around California, then I better stay. He was one of the main reasons I moved to the state. I don’t think that I have ever heard a better guitar player. He is also such a funny man. And musically, he is like a shapeshifter.”
Three years ago, Ronstadt decided to sell her recorded music assets, which include the royalty streams, to Irving Azoff’s Iconic Artist Group.
At this time, there is no title for the Linda Ronstadt biopic starring Selena Gomez, nor a release date.
