The 17-year-old suspect in the Perry High School shootingin Iowa last week is believed to have warned he was 'gearing up' for his 'plan' on Discord, a social media platform.
Dylan Butler, who was a student at the school, killed 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff and injured seven other people when he opened fire in the cafeteria of the school.
Dylan is suspected of having an account on Discord, which is a social media platform, where he allegedly warned he was 'gearing up' for the attack and went on to use racial slurs ahead of the shooting.
Investigators are looking into Dylan's social media use, and believe the username “took2much" belonged to the 17-year-old. Messages were shared on the Discord app from that username just moments before the shooting, which reportedly read, “I’m f------ nervous, I’m [in] the bathroom gearing up.”
Another message allegedly stated, “There’s a n—– in the bathroom. I need him to leave, so I can assemble my guns.”
It is suspected that these messages were shared by Dylan from the school bathroom.
Police Investigating Dylan Butler's Social Media Messages
In addition to the message on Discord, police have found a video that was shared on the TikTok account with the name “tooktoomuch,” similar to the Discord username, which was filmed inside what appeared to be a school bathroom.
The video was reportedly captioned, “now we wait” and the song 'Stray Bullet' by the German band KMFDM played in the background.
Investigators have also found photos of Butler posing with firearms on social media.
Discord User Speaks Out Regarding Concerning Messages
Another Discord user told NBC News that the account “took2much” was involved in a chat -- titled the “School Massacres Discussion” board --where Discord users discussed other school shootings that have occurred recently.
The Discord user, who spoke to NBC, says they tried to contact the FBI last year about the chat, but they did not hear back.
A spokesperson for Discord released a statement, per NBC, and said the social media platform had taken action against accounts and content believed to have belonged to the suspect, meaning the accounts have been suspended.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the victims, their families, and the community in Perry, Iowa following yesterday’s horrific shooting. Discord has a zero-tolerance policy against content that glorifies violence and violent extremism, which is reflected in our Community Guidelines. We took immediate action against the suspect and his content, and are currently cooperating with law enforcement to assist them in their continuing investigation,” the spokesperson said in an emailed statement, per NBC.
What Happened at Perry High School In Iowa?
According to investigators, the 17-year-old student was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. He opened fire at Perry High School just after 7:30 a.m. Thursday -- the first day back from winter break.
Dylan Butler was named the suspect in the shooting. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Friends and family described Butler as a quiet person, who had been bullied since elementary school. Butler's sisters claimed the bullying became worse once his younger sister also started getting picked on.
Police believe Dylan acted alone in the shooting.
