Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green has broken his silence about his indefinite suspension during the first 2024 episode of his podcast, "The Draymond Green Show."
During the episode, he revealed that retirement was on his mind. Does that mean that the end of his NBA career is near? Or has he decided to stick it out and start over fresh?
Draymond Green Opens Up About Suspension On Latest Episode Of His Podcast
During the first 2024 episode of Green's podcast, he reflected on his current indefinite suspension from the NBA, what got him here, and his thoughts on retiring from the league.
"There's no surprise in what's been going on with me this year. And I want to talk about those things," he began his podcast episode. "Number one: in coming back, in working my way back from the indefinite suspension that I've been serving, I'll start from the beginning and just walk you through my process."
Green said he understands that everyone has had questions about what's going on and he wants to "lift up the curtain" and explain his process.
"For me, in my life, I know it's been a very important one and as you know I'm not one to shy away from letting you guys in on these things," he continued. "For starters, let's go back to December 12. That date will be engraved in my mind for a while."
He then dove into explaining what happened on December 12 in Phoenix when the Warriors played the Suns. During the third quarter, he had an issue with Jusuf Nurkic of the Suns and got kicked out of the game.
"As I said then and I'll say now, I was wrong," he said. "I was wrong regardless of what I was trying to do."
The Warriors star said he accepts his fault in what happened and apologizes.
"Rudy Gobert's situation, I was wrong, went way too far," he continued. "I am a guy who plays on the edge. I am a guy who walks right up to that line and I have no problem with admitting I have walked over that line. And for that, I apologize. I apologize to my family as they had to endure things that, as the leader of a family, you have to lead when it's good, you have to lead when it's bad as leader of anything. Very hard to lead when you've created the bad."
Green went on to explain that he has a wife, children, siblings, parents, and friends that he is embarrassed, and he's hurt by it. His mom experienced death threats, he said. His school-aged children, who go to school in the Bay Area, most of their friends and friend's parents are Warriors fans, so they've had to live with what Green has done.
Green revealed that for two days after the December 12 incident, he sat alone in his "man cave" with only his wife knowing he was home and that it was his 3-year-old that got him out of the dark "man cave." It was then that he realized he needed to move forward.
"Also on that day, Coach Kerr came to visit me after shooting around. We sat in the yard, he cried, I cried," he said. "Because there's a bond there, that's seen it all."
Draymond Talked To NBA Commission Adam Silver About Retirement
Green had a conversation with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and told him "It's too much for me."
"It's all becoming too much for me," he said to Silver. "And I'm going to retire."
Silver told him he's making a "very rash" decision, and he won't allow him to do that, but Green told him he's not sure it's actually a "rash decision" because "it's just all too much."
The two had what Green called a "long, great conversation" and he said he's lucky to be under the guidance of Silver and others in the league.
"Very thankful to play in a league with a commissioner like Adam who's more about helping you than hurting you; helping you than punishing you," Green said. "He's more about the players."
Green is gearing up for his return to the court after his "indefinite" suspension after missing 14 games so far. Green underwent a month of counseling and was reinstated by the NBA over the weekend. He's back with his team and sources say he's expected to return to the court in about a week, but as of now, no return date has been released just yet.
"I'm excited to get back with my teammates," he said. "I'm excited to get back in the arena and do what I love to do, because not every day do people get to do what they love to do, and I want to do all that I can to not f--- that up for me."
