"The Woman In Me," the memoir released by pop star Britney Spears on Tuesday, October 24, is no longer the top-selling memoir on Amazon following the death of "Friends" star Matthew Perry.
The beloved actor, best known for playing Chandler Bing on the NBC television sitcom from 1994 to 2004, passed away over the weekend after being found unresponsive in his hot tub. An official cause of death has yet to be released as fans and famous friends took to social media to share their condolences and reflect on the life of the late actor.
Matthew Perry's Memoir Is Now #1 On Amazon Overtaking Britney Spears 'The Woman In Me'
The actor’s autobiography “Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing” has become a bestseller almost exactly one year after its release, replacing “The Woman In Me” at the top of the Amazon charts. Perry’s memoir chronicled not only his time on “Friends” but also his long battle with addiction.
In his book, Perry admitted that he had spent over $9 million to try to get sober and claimed that he had been to over six thousand AA meetings. He said that he had gone to rehab fifteen times and detoxed on 65 different occasions, as per the Daily Mail.
In the book’s prologue, Perry wrote, “I should be dead,” adding, “My mind is out to kill me, and I know it. I am constantly filled with a lurking loneliness, a yearning, clinging to the notion that something outside of me will fix me.”
On the set of his film “Fools Rush In,” Perry was hospitalized due to a jet ski accident and later became addicted to Vicodin. He claimed that he started taking 55 Vicodin pills a day and watched his weight drop to 128 pounds during the height of his addiction. His battles with addiction did not only impact his mental health. In 2000, he was hospitalized with pancreatitis. In 2018, his colon burst.
Perry Struggled With His Physical And Mental Health As A Result Of His Addiction
During an interview for his book, Perry told Diane Sawyer that doctors told his family that he “had a 2 percent chance to live.”
“I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that's called a Hail Mary. No one survives that,” he explained, adding that he spent two weeks in a coma. He spent five months in the hospital and later used a colostomy bag for nine months. The actor admitted that he had only been sober for one of the ten seasons of "Friends" and described his cast members as "understanding" and "patient" in his autobiography.
In 2021, a year before his memoir was released, he said he had committed to living a healthier lifestyle. In an interview with People magazine, Perry looked back on writing the book. "It all flew out of me," he recalled. "It wasn't that difficult a book to write. It's a more difficult thing to read, because you go, 'Wow, this is a horrible story.' But there's a sense of humor that runs through it."
On Saturday, Matthew Perry was announced dead at age 54 after being found in his Pacific Palisades home. He had been in his hot tub when his assistant found him unresponsive and attempted to resuscitate him, according to a new report. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that the actor’s body was not “waterlogged” when emergency services arrived at the scene, where he was pronounced dead.
Britney Spears Admits She Still Likes To Watch 'Friends' In Her Free Time!
On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, pop star Britney Spears released her tell-all memoir, “The Woman In Me.” In an interview with People magazine a week before the release of her book, the "Toxic" singer told the publication that she is a “simple girl” who likes to spend her free time playing with her dogs and watching “Friends.”
“I really love people. I love God, I still love my family and close friends. I love tea parties and dinner parties. My friend Cade [Hudson] has me to dinner where I meet the most creative people I admire who make me belly laugh,” she said, referring to her longtime manager. The Princess of Pop explained that she is still “learning this new freedom” and confessed that it can be “challenging at times” to learn her limits. That being said, she likes to spend her free time “playing with my dogs [or] watching episodes of Friends and belly laughing.”
RIP Matthew Perry.
