Pop star Britney Spears is putting “I Am Britney Spears Now” on a wide range of “The Woman In Me” merchandise for a good reason.
She claims that her father, Jamie Spears, once said that to her during her 13-year conservatorship, which lasted from February 2008 to November 2021.
Britney Spears Laments Being Jamie Spears’ ‘Cash Flow’ During Conservatorship
In an excerpt from her memoir, “The Woman In Me,” released by People magazine on Thursday, the Princess of Pop laments being used for her father’s “cash flow” and nothing else. At the start of her conservatorship in 2008, Britney lamented how she was "too sick to choose my own boyfriend and yet somehow healthy enough to appear on sitcoms and morning shows, and to perform for thousands of people in a different part of the world every week.”
“From that point on, I began to think that he saw me as put on the earth for no other reason than to help their cash flow,” Britney wrote, claiming that he told her, “I’m Britney Spears now” at the start of her 13-year conservatorship.
After years of partying with famous faces like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, Britney said that she “went from partying a lot to being a total monk.”
"Security guards handed me prepackaged envelopes of meds and watched me take them. They put parental controls on my iPhone. Everything was scrutinized and controlled. Everything,” Britney wrote in her memoir.
Britney Says She Feels ‘Sick’ Thinking About The Control Her Father Had Over Her Body
In another excerpt from her memoir released by People magazine, the “Toxic” singer said she felt like a “shadow” of herself after thinking about how her father and his associates controlled her, her public image, and her career for over a decade.
“Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long and it makes me feel sick,” she wrote.
“Think of how many male artists gambled all their money away; how many had substance abuse or mental health issues. No one tried to take away their control over their bodies and money,” she continued, adding, “I didn’t deserve what my family did to me.”
Britney Spears Explains Why She Shaved Her Head in 2007
One of the biggest moments that led to her conservatorship was when the pop star publicly shaved her head in 2007 while paparazzi took photos through the windows. “I’d been eyeballed so much growing up, I’d been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body, since I was a teenager. Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back,” she wrote in another excerpt obtained by People magazine.
However, once she was placed under a conservatorship, that all changed. “But under the conservatorship, I was made to understand that those days were now over. I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape,” she wrote. “I had to go to bed early and take whatever medication they told me to take.”
She revealed that, in addition to being body-shamed by the media, she was now also being constantly scrutinized by her father. “If I thought getting criticized about my body in the press was bad, it hurt even more from my own father. He repeatedly told me I looked fat and that I was going to have to do something about it,” she wrote.
“Feeling like you’re never good enough is a soul-crushing state of being for a child,” she continued. “He’d drummed that message into me as a girl, and even after I’d accomplished so much, he was continuing to do that to me.”
She went on to say that being in the conservatorship made her feel like a “robot” and contributed to the death of her creativity. “If they’d let me live my life, I know I would’ve followed my heart and come out of this the right way and worked it out,” she wrote.
“Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself,” she added. “I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long and it makes me feel sick.”
Britney Spears' memoir "The Woman In Me" is scheduled for release on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
