Selena Gomez's Sister & Friends Have Been Helpful In Her Mental Health Journey

Selena's journey with mental health began in 2014 when she sought treatment following a diagnosis of lupus. Since then, she has participated in various voluntary programs to address panic attacks, anxiety, and depression.

Even her 2022 documentary, "Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me," chronicled her decision to publicly disclose her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Due to her struggles and the help she has gotten through her voluntary programs, the annual World Mental Health Day holds a special spot in her heart and life.

For this year's occasion, the "Only Murders in the Building" actress has partnered with Sephora to donate 100% of all Rare Beauty product sales worldwide to the brand's complementary nonprofit, the Rare Impact Fund.

Before the actualization of that plan, she sat with British Vogue to talk about how she was doing mentally these days. The 16-time Guinness World Records breaker began by disclosing that hanging out with her ten-year-old sister helped her handle things better. In her words:

"I don't feel good all the time. She reminds me of a perspective in life that can be a bit simpler and pure. Even just having a moment with her makes me feel better."

Having supportive friends like the award-winning pop singer Taylor Swift has also made a significant difference in Selena's life. "I can gauge the difference between someone who wants to actually get to know me versus someone who just wants to know me as a [celebrity]. I'm grateful that I can tell," the American Music Awards winner explained.

Wrapping up, she offered some helpful tips to people who want to show support to a loved one going through a mental health struggle of their own. Noting that listening was one of the best ways to show support, the most followed woman on Instagram expressed:

"One of the key components of a friendship for me is trust. I would also say be careful with who you trust. Hopefully someone can just hear you out and not judge you. I believe in unconditional love and that if you can't be your authentic self, maybe you shouldn't be around those people."

Amid being open about her struggles, Selena had previously admitted that divulging her bipolar diagnosis to fans in 2020 required a lot of courage. The "Wizards of Waverly Place" star confessed:

"I grew up being a people pleaser. I had a responsibility at a very young age—young people were looking up to me. I didn't know who I was. Having that responsibility would make me walk on eggshells a lot. I thought maybe it would be damaging to tell people who I am. It started to become a threat that freaked me out. Well, if you're not right, then you can't work."

The 'People You Know' Singer's Newfound Happiness Will Seep Into Her Impending Album

Aside from prioritizing her mental health, the "People You Know" singer has been working on a new studio album after a three-year hiatus from music. Speaking on the upcoming project during a recent interview, she shared that taking a break from making music was a "fun departure," giving her an opportunity to reevaluate her goals, particularly those related to her own happiness.

The Blast reported that after the "Lose You to Love Me" songstress acknowledged her affinity for "sad-girl music" and her proficiency in creating it, Selena stated:

"However, I can't write that if I'm not sad. I've had to relearn what being me and being happy looked like. There is not one sad song on this album."

The "13 Reasons Why" executive producer then emphasized that her next album being void of sadness didn't extend to her private life. "I've never promised anyone I'll never have a bad day again. I've always been honest with my fans. Even when I take breaks from social media, I'll say I'm taking a break," Selena detailed.
