Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas Claim It Was A ‘United Decision’ To End Their Marriage

On Wednesday morning, actress Sophie Turner took to Instagram to release a joint statement regarding her divorce from Joe Jonas.

The brief joint statement was released only one day after the Jonas Brother filed for divorce, following reports that he had been seen without his wedding ring.

In a brief Instagram statement, the former couple denounced reports that it was anyone’s fault in the marriage and called the split a “united decision.”

“Statement from the two of us: After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” the statement reads.

The split came as a surprise to some fans but it did not come as a surprise to many in the industry. One source who knows the couple told People magazine that the divorce was not a “surprise” to many friends as they had spent “the whole summer apart.” The source added, “They were not separated but they’ve been living separate lives for months.”

The source went on to say that the two “haven’t gotten along in a while, but they’re hoping to resolve this all amicably.”

"As far as custody goes, this literally all just happened, so they're figuring it out in real-time," the insider continued. "They did have a prenup. As a family, they were based in Florida. The kids were with him the last few months, traveling with him with family while he's been on tour. Sophie's been working in the UK."

The Blast has been able to confirm that the former couple has an iron-clad prenup. The musician filed for divorce from the “Game of Thrones” actress after four years of marriage. They share a 3-year-old daughter named Willa and a 14-month-old daughter who was identified in the court papers as D. However, her full legal first name has yet to be revealed.

According to the divorce filing, "the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.”

The couple met in 2016 on Instagram and exchanged a few messages before deciding to meet in person. Last November, Jonas explained in an interview with Mr. Porter about why he and Sophie Turner decided to keep their relationship private.

"I want to feel like an open book," he said at the time. "But when we started dating, I realized that I didn't have a ton of stuff that was just for me. And in the end, it makes me a better person to have something for myself."

"Just something that I'm learning as I go, I think I can now work a little bit harder to take time off. I'm still trying to figure it out," he told People magazine in August 2022. "Some weeks are a little bit more challenging than others, but it makes it a lot easier when you enjoy your gig… I wake up every day just thrilled to be able to go make music or act and create different projects and have a beautiful family, so it feels like a dream come true."

According to the divorce documents, filed in Miami on Tuesday, the “Sucker” singer stated that his two children have been mostly spending time with him over the past few months. “A parenting plan should be established, which addressed all parenting issues and contains a timesharing schedule providing for frequent and continuing contact with both parties," the filing states. "The children have been residing with their father in Miami and other locations throughout the United States."

While they were expecting their second child, Jonas told People magazine: "It's been amazing to be a dad and to learn every day more about myself and what that's like,” adding that he was “very much looking forward to the future on all things." Sophie Turner also said that being a mother has made her a better actress has given her a "different perspective" on her roles and has made her a "much more emotional person."

"The empathy is heightened; the feelings about family are just like overflowing," she said on The Wrap’s UnWrapped podcast. "It's made me a better actor for becoming, you know, becoming a mother."
