Miley Cyrus Says She Had Therapy To 'Heal Painful Memories' From Her Disney Child Star Days

Miley Cyrus opened up about needing therapy to recover from her years as a Disney child star.

The singer hit fame for playing Hannah Montana on the Disney sitcom from 2006 to 2011. Cyrus also addressed her dramatic image change through sexually charged songs and performances.

When asked to share advice with newcomers in the industry, Cyrus said never to "google yourself." She also recently reflected on walking her mom, Tish Cyrus, down the aisle to Dominic Purcell.

During a new interview with The Sun, Miley Cyrus opened up about needing therapy to recover from the criticisms she faced as a child star. She hit fame in 2006, playing the role of Hannah Montana in the same-named Disney Channel sitcom. The show follows an ordinary girl living in Malibu and hiding her double life as a famous pop star. It ran from 2006 to 2011.

At the time, Cyrus was only 13 years old and said her early stardom affected her life in several ways. The "Angels Like You" singer said getting therapy helped her deal with the "painful memories" and brought her to a "good place" in her life.

She said, per Daily Mail, "When I look back at the criticism I received as a child, it has only been these last few years that I have understood just how wrong that was. I believe in therapy to help heal painful memories, and I am in a good place - but the reality is, it should never have happened!"

During the interview, Cyrus also addressed how she changed her image from a child star to a wild girl. At the 2013 VMAs, the "Party in the USA" singer had a very sexual and controversial performance with Robin Thicke.

The same day, Cyrus released the music video for her song "Wrecking Ball," which featured her naked and swinging on an absolute wrecking ball. The song, video, and performance had the desired effect of shedding the singer's child star image. She reflected on the career move and said it was done to prove she had her image outside Hannah Montana.

Cyrus said, "I wouldn't erase any part of my story or my transition - I always think an interesting life makes for interesting storytelling." She also spoke about how being honest with her fans about her depression struggles helped her journey.

She added, "That gave me a real purpose, a reason to get up in the morning. When you are open and honest, that becomes a part of who you are - and organically, that will be reflected in your songwriting."

During her conversation with The Sun, Cyrus was asked to advise newcomers in the showbiz industry. The "Flowers" singer shared that they should never search their names online and emphasized the underrated dangers of the internet.

She said, "Don't Google yourself - I am being serious, don't Google yourself! People are ready to talk about the dangers of drink and drugs for people in the industry - but there isn't enough warning about the internet. It can be a truly toxic place!"

In a recent interview with Vogue, Cyrus reflected on being the maid of honor at her mom, Tish Cyrus' wedding to "Prison Break" actor Dominic Purcell. The "The Last Song" actress said that walking Tish down the aisle was beautiful for her.

She said, "To see my mom this happy and in love is very emotional for me. Dom and my mom share the sweetest, most genuine love. It's almost like it's for the first time, which is so fitting for my mom, who is such a young soul."

Cyrus also gushed about how Purcell has made her mom so happy she's "gotten even more beautiful." The singer supported the new couple so much that she hosted the wedding at her Malibu home.

While speaking about Tish walking down the aisle, Miley said, "To stand beside my mother and give her away to Dom is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life."
