Lauryn Hill gave her fans an unforeseen treat during her headline performance at a music festival in Philadelphia during the weekend.
The 48-year-old singer was joined by her former Fugees bandmates, Pras Michel and Wyclef Jean, during her set on Saturday, June 3. Although the mini-reunion thrilled the audience, it might be the band's last time together on-stage as Pras' legal troubles have him facing up to 20 years in prison in a federal case.
Lauryn Hill & Her Former Fugees Band Members Wowed The Crowd In Philadelphia
Hill's Saturday night performance at the Roots Picnic music festival was exceptional as she celebrated the 25th anniversary of her debut solo album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." And from what happened during her set, her fellow band members were well aware of the occasion's importance and joined her on-stage for a mind-blowing performance.
The once-in-a-lifetime moment came after the former Fugees frontwoman belted out her cover of Frankie Valli's 1967 song, "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," and an animated rendition of her 1998 classic, "Doo Wop (That Thing)," the audience welcomed several members of the Roots, Michel, and Jean.
As detailed by Variety, the former trio seemed in perfect sync with one another, kicking off their six-song set with "The Score" and ending with "Fu-Gee-La." In between the two songs, the hip-hop group belted out "How Many Mics," "Zealots," "Ready or Not," and "Killing Me Softly With His Song."
Hill paired a black ankle-length dress with a lace skirt, a matching jacket, and a white collared top for the event. As for the men, Jean wore a graphic multicolored sweater, black pants, and a blue bucket hat, and Michel donned a gray sweatshirt, distressed jeans, and an orange, white, and gray vest.
Beyond being a shocker for festival attendees, the most magical thing about the Fugees' mini-reunion was that it happened, especially since they canceled their 2021 tour and Michel's ongoing legal battle. The 50-year-old rapper — whose full name is Prakazrel Samuel Michel — got convicted of ten counts of illegal lobbying, witness tampering, money laundering, and campaign finance violations in April.
The ex-Refugee Camp All-Stars member's conviction aligns with his role in a multimillion-dollar government influence campaign involving both the Barack Obama and Donald Trump administrations.
The Grammy Awards Winner Has Six Children & She Could Not Be Happier
When Hill is not delighting thousands of people on stage, she is often spending quality time with her children. In fact, the "Ready or Not" hitmaker stepped away from the limelight to focus on raising her six kids, five of whom she shares with Rohan Marley — the son of Bob and Rita Marley.
Out of the six, the multihyphenate figure - who birthed her sixth child and youngest son Michal Hill in 2011 - has four adults. One of those adults would be Zion Marley, whom Essence reported his mother immortalized in her album through the song "To Zion."
The 25-year-old, who became a father in 2017, showed that the song held a distinctive meaning to him last year. He had taken to social media to share the lyrics of the smash hit, which highlights the songwriter's journey to motherhood and her decision to have a child amid discouragement from her colleagues, alongside the caption, "I pray I never let you down! My purpose is only getting clearer."
As for his sister, Selah — the first daughter of Hill and Marley, she is an alum of New York University and has become known for her work as a model. The 24-year-old has not only been modeling since 2011 but has also used her platform to publicly speak about her mom's upbringing methods, such as being disciplined with a belt growing up.
While the first children did not tow their famous mother's musical path, Hill's second son, Joshua, is musically inclined. The 21-year-old is also a dad to son Caleb, whom he welcomed in 2022.
The "Daddy's Girl" actress' third son, Joshua Marley, is a St. John's University college student. When he is not up to his neck in his books, the 20-year-old is delivering his fashion skills and "swag" on social media.
Meanwhile, Hill's second daughter, Sara Marley, is rounding off her first year of high school and showing off her talents through reels that feature her making dubs of popular songs and remixes via TikTok.
Finally, Micah is still growing; he is set to clock 12 this summer. If this year's celebration is anything like his last birthday, which featured NBA star Derrick Rose teaching the celebrant and his friends how to perfect their basketball skills, fans can expect to see the young boy having the best time.
