Lauryn Hill’s daughter Selah Marley is telling people to back off her parents and accuses the internet of taking her comments out of context.
Earlier this week, Selah made headlines after speaking to her followers during an hour-long conversation. During the chat, Selah spoke about growing up, the trauma she deals with, and what caused the pain.
Many people found her comments about her mother Lauryn and father Rohan Marley to be the most salacious. At one point, Selah detailed the way Lauryn disciplined her with a belt. She said, “She was just very angry. She was very, very angry. So so so angry. She was unapproachable, not easy to talk to.
Selah said Lauryn would hit her with the belt. She said, “you walk to go get the belt, the switch, this that. And my mother is an amazing woman, but she obviously didn’t do everything right.”
Following her Instagram video, Selah clarified her comments saying, “jesus christ. The discussion that I had was a larger conversation about a certain trauma that I experienced from a lack of unity in the houself. This is nothing new. This is commonplace for many people & I’m glad so many of you were about to resonate with the healing that I speak of. But please do not go bashing my parents right now—especially my father. I never said I did not love him. I said that their shortcomings created trauma that I now need to consciously and actively heal from.”
Following the Instagram video, Selah says she spoke to her father on the phone. They talked it out and are working on fixing their relationship. Rohan released a statement apologizing to his daughter. He said, “I love her very much and do apologize for any contributions I may have added by arguing in front of her as a child. I’ve grown as a man, a spiritual being and a father. I am constantly growing and will teach my children to always take the higher road in any disagreements.
I will be there for her no matter how many hours, days, months or years it will take. I will be the best Dad that I can be. One Love.”
