After facing the music of negative comments made about teachers on her podcast, Meghan Trainor is trying to do better.
The "Made You Look" singer commented, "F teachers," during a recent episode of her "Workin' On It" podcast with guest Trisha Paytas. After being called out by many teachers on social media, she apologized in a TikTok video.
In the viral apology video she said, "I love teachers, I fight for teachers," and now the singer is putting actions to her words. In a series of recent Instagram Stories, she celebrates Teacher Appreciation Day and asks teachers to share their Amazon wish lists with her.
Actions Speak Louder Than Words, And Meghan Trainor Is Taking Action
The teachers on TikTok did not widely accept Trainor's apology, and many asked what she was doing to advocate or fight for teachers, as she said in the video. Now, a little over a week after issuing her apology, she's taking steps to prove that she is sorry and does want to make this right.
The "I Am Your Mother" singer shared a series of Instagram Story slides on Tuesday directed at teachers. Her first slide was a simple one that said, "Happy Teacher Appreciation Day." The next Story slide shows how you can find a local classroom to support a teacher near you with DonorsChoose.
Trainor also shared a Story about "Teacher Appreciation Week Funding Opportunities" and how to donate to support AdoptAClassroom. This national, tech-based nonprofit organization provides classroom funding throughout the United States.
The next Story slide is a thank you video from PBS Learning Media. Trainor added, "Thank you, teachers, for all you do."
A final Story slide asks teachers to "feel free to drop the link to your Amazon wish list here."
Meghan Trainor's TikTok Apology Wasn't Widely Accepted
There have been more than 4.6 million views of the "Dear Future Mama" author's apology video on TikTok, with 34,000 comments flooding the comment section, many of which were challenging the singer to do better and saying the apology isn't being accepted.
Many teachers hopped into the comments to leave their thoughts on what Trainor said during the podcast.
"Do. Better. We don't deserve this," one teacher wrote. "I get ignored, overlooked, talked over, cussed at, stuff stolen/broken, called from all over telling me I'm not doing enough. I'm tired. So sad," another teacher said.
One teacher reminded Trainor of the sacrifices teachers make. "This is super upsetting to hear as a teacher. We work thankless jobs, put our money into our classrooms, and work countless unpaid hours."
Another teacher wrote about some of the emotional tolls of the job, saying, "This week, after our 2nd bomb threat, I spoke to my students about how I lose sleep worrying about how I can protect them… but, F teachers…."
Meghan Trainor Issued A Second Apology On Her Recent Podcast Episode
Trainor's most recent podcast episode began with a second apology geared toward teachers.
"I wanted to apologize again to all the teachers I may have offended or hurt. I've lost a lot of sleep and cried myself to sleep a lot. Not because of internet hate, I'm used to that, but thinking, or wondering, or knowing that I hurt so many innocent people with my words when I got heated in a conversation about a specific teacher that hurt her feelings," she said.
"I want you to know that I'm on this platform, and I hear and recognize how powerful my words are, and I'm so sorry. I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings, especially teachers."
She concluded her second apology by saying she hoped that one day everyone would forgive her for what she said in the heat of the moment.
"I love all of you and work on myself daily. We're working on ourselves to be better people. I'm trying to spread love, happiness, and joy and will work on myself moving forward," she said. "I'm so sorry, there are no excuses for my words, and I hope someday you all can forgive me in your own time, and I will try to be better every day. And thanks for calling me out."
