Zack explained that he was full of “anger and rage” in high school because his mother’s mental illness and addiction were “out of control.” He alleged that he would sometimes come home from school to find his room destroyed after his mother had a manic episode.

Sometimes, he said that his mother would disappear for days, occasionally taking his little sister with her. He said that there was “no stability” in his upbringing and “lost track” of how many times they had to move.

Although he admitted he didn’t understand mental illness or addiction as a teenager, he did admit that he was angry as he grew up and had to experience the cops coming to the house and his mother threatening suicide.

In the pods, Zack and his now-wife, Bliss Poureetezadi, bonded over the song, “I Hope You Dance.” Zack revealed that his mother had dedicated that song to him after they had a “huge argument.” That song later became the first dance at their wedding, which fans saw during the season 4 "Love Is Blind" finale.

The "Love Is Blind" contestant then discussed how he was invited to a youth group at a church in his senior year of high school. After a conversation with a pastor who told him a story about a man who sacrificed everything so that others could be forgiven, Zack said he realized “what it means to give grace.”

“The idea that a parent would take on the punishment that their child deserved not because it was just but out of love changed something inside of me,” he wrote. “It was in that moment that I chose to forgive my mother. Truly forgive her. And that choice changed my life.”

'And That's When The Lightbulb Went Off'

By the time Zack was entering his junior year of college, his mother had been committed several times and lost custody of his little sister. Zack spent his time volunteering at a homeless shelter and listening to “the stories of men and women who were at rock bottom.”

Zack encountered one man, a father, who revealed that he was homeless due to his addiction. “I asked him if his children knew how he was doing. He told me that he lied to them and didn’t let them know,” Zack wrote. “And that’s when the lightbulb went off.”

Zack realized that his mother’s excuses to avoid seeing him were likely due to the fact that she was homeless as well and “didn’t want me to see how bad she had gotten.” After he finally got in touch with her, he drove across the state of Washington to see her.

Although his mother tried to back out of their meeting, their first in six months, yet again, Zack told her to come and, fortunately, she did.

During the meeting, Zack noticed that it looked like “she hadn’t eaten or slept in weeks.” After hugging her and forgiving her, Zack realized that she “had still not forgiven herself.” At the time, she was living in a storage unit and using a space heater to keep warm.

Calling it “the day everything changed,” Zack described how his mother “miraculously” started on the road to recovery. Fortunately, she also had the support of Zack’s grandmother and aunts, who “never stopped believing in her.”

Zack explained that she spent the rest of her life serving the mentally and physically disabled. Zack and his sister even got to spend “a few normal Christmases” with her as a family before she passed away.

“They are moments that I never would have gotten if I held onto the pain of the past and chosen not to forgive,” Zack wrote. “Grace isn’t fair. But if we choose to give it every day, we make the world a better place for everyone.”

“When I was going through my mother’s things after she died, I found a small note,” he continued. “It was dated shortly after the day I sat down with her in that small town in the middle of nowhere.”

“It said ‘Somehow she found a little hope in her hopelessness.’ We all can be someone’s hope in the hopelessness.”
