Emmy Award-winning actor Jon Hamm ("Mad Men") has lined up his next role. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hamm has been cast as the gym coach, Coach Carr, for the upcoming musical film adaptation of the hit movie, "Mean Girls."

The project is currently in the works for Paramount+.

The new film will adapt the Broadway musical version of "Mean Girls," based on the 2004 movie of the same name. Paramount Pictures is producing the project for its streaming service.

Hamm joins the cast alongside Angourie Rice ("Spider-Man: Homecoming"), Auli'i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, and Renee Rapp. Rice has been cast as Cady, who Lindsay Lohan portrayed in the film version. Cravalho will portray Janis, and Spivey will be Damien, first performed by Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Franzese in the first movie. Dwayne Hill initially portrayed Coach Carr in the film.

THR reports that original star and screenwriter Tina Fey and Tim Meadows are returning for the musical adaptation. Newcomers to the cast also include Jenna Fischer ("The Office"), Busy Philipps, Avantika, Mahi Alam, Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, Ashley Park, and Connor Ratliff.

The story follows Cady Heron, a girl who moves from Africa with her scientist parents to the suburbs of Illinois, where she has to face the power dynamics of the social cliques in her new high school. She eventually falls in with the popular girls called the Plastics.

The 2004 film was a critical and commercial success when it was first released in April 2004. It grossed $86 million at the domestic box office and $130 million worldwide from a $17 million budget. It also scored an 84% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lorne Michaels ("Saturday Night Live") is producing the film with Fey, who also wrote the book for the Broadway show adaptation. Erin David, Caroline Maroney, and Micah Frank are executive producing the new movie for Broadway Video, with Eric Guriana and Jeff Richmond overseeing the project for Little Stranger.

Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. are co-directing the film from Fey's script. The film will feature music by Jeff Richmond and Lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Kyle Hanagami is choreographing the project. Mark Waters ("Mr. Popper's Penguins," "Vampire Academy," "Witches of East End," "He's All That") was the director of the original film.

Hamm recently appeared in the Best Picture-nominated film, "Top Gun: Maverick." He is also working on the new season of the Apple TV+ series, "The Morning Show." However, Hamm is likely best known for his award-winning work on the hit television show, "Mad Men," which ran for seven seasons and 92 episodes on AMC from 2007-2015. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on the series Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2015. He also won a Golden Globe Award in 2016 for his work on the show.

The new "Mean Girls" musical film has no official release date yet. It will stream exclusively on Paramount+ later on.
