Ashton Kutcher finally addressed the viral photos of him and Reese Witherspoon standing awkwardly at their recent film premiere. The actor who appeared on the Chicks in the Office podcast said they only stood with such distance between them to avoid any rumors about an extramarital affair.

Kutcher said per Variety, "Here's the thing: If I put my arm around her and was, like, all friendly with her, I'd be having an affair with her. If I stand next to her and I put my hands in my pockets, there's no chance that, like, that could be the rumor, the rumor is we don't like each other."

Kutcher, who's married to actress Mila Kunis, then clarified that he and Witherspoon are great friends despite the awkward photos. The "The Butterfly Effect" star said, "Reese and I are really good friends. We're really close. I don't have to defend that."

Kutcher explained that another factor that led to the awkward photos was his confusion on the red carpet. The "Just Married" actor said he's "hard of hearing," which was worsened by the constant yelling by the photographers trying to catch their attention.

He said, "I don't know who's yelling my name, but I know there's a lot of people yelling, 'Reese, Ashton, over here …' and, at a certain point, you're looking like, 'God, this is really something'… for like 20 minutes. If you're going to tell me in that entire 20 minutes, at one point, you're not going to have an awkward face on, then you're better than I am and I'm cool with that."

The photo in question went viral over the weekend on social media, with many fans questioning the duo's chemistry. In the photo, Kutcher stands stoically with his hand in his pockets, and Witherspoon poses rigidly at a small distance from him.

The photos attracted thousands of comments and reposts on social media, and even Kunis had to tease her husband and close friend about their awkward chemistry. Kutcher revealed that he hadn't even seen the various memes generated from his and Witherspoon's photos until Kunis texted him.

He said, "My wife called me. She texted Reese and me together and said, 'Guys, you gotta, like… act like you like each other." Kutcher's fear of the affair rumors could be due to the situation of Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain in 2021. The actors had sizzling chemistry on the red carpet for their film "Scenes From a Marriage," which triggered affair rumors.

Witherspoon confirmed Kutcher's statements about their awkward chemistry during a recent appearance on the "Today" show. The actress also said that she'd known Kunis for a long while, so it was actually "fun" for her to get to know one of her friend's partners.

Witherspoon, who's married to Jim Toth, also praised Kutcher for being an amazing co-star in their film. The "Sweet Home Alabama" actress said, "He's so professional. He's the funniest guy.
