The NFL had asked the "Diamonds" singer to perform at the Super Bowl in 2019, but she declined out of solidarity with Colin Kaepernick.

At the time, Kaepernick was protesting police brutality against people of color by kneeling during the national anthem at NFL games, which sparked outrage from then-President Donald Trump and his supporters.

The NFL then created a rule that penalizes players and/or teams for protesting the national anthem.

In a 2019 interview with Vogue, Rihanna said, "I couldn't dare do that. For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn't be a sellout. I couldn't be an enabler."

"There's things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way," she added.
