Now they weren’t necessarily telling her what to wear but there were so many restrictions around what she couldn’t wear that it left very few options. She ended up stuck with “muted tones” during her time in the UK.

“I rarely wore color,” recalled Markle in Harry & Meghan. “To my understanding, you can’t ever wear the same color as Her Majesty [Queen Elizabeth II] if there’s a group event,” she revealed.

“But then you also should never be wearing the same color as one of the other more senior members of the family,” points out the former Suits star.

She felt stuck in those darker, fall shades all year round. “So I was like, ‘Well, what a color that they’ll probably never wear? Camel? Beige? White?'” she revealed that at that point she was focused on trying to just “blend in,” and not ruffle any feathers or step on any toes.

“I’m not trying to stand out here. So there’s no version of me joining this family and trying to not do everything I could to fit in.” Markel admitted she worried a lot about embarrassing “the family”.

She did take an opportunity once to step out and pop in some color, an orange gown for a gala, and while it was liberating it only happened after she and Harry quit their royal duties.

The former actress has shared in the past that leaving England was the only choice for herself and her family and Harry has backed her up. The prince shared that he saw his wife falling apart in front of him and needed to make a drastic change.

“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” said Markle in an interview with Oprah. “I would sit up at night, and I was just like, ‘I don’t understand how all of this is being churned out.” She clearly says to Oprah when asked by the host, “Were you thinking of harming yourself? Were you having suicidal thoughts?”

To which Markel replied, “Yes. This was very clear.”

Harry also saw things that his wife was yet to pick up on such as similarities in the way his mother Princess Diana and Meghan were being treated. He didn’t feel as though his wife was being protected and he chalked that up to the color of her skin.

Markle noted that she felt trapped in the palace and “couldn’t, you know, call an Uber to the palace.”

All the allegations prompted Prince William to make a statement saying, “We are very much not a racist family.” The “institution” has long been associated with racist behavior and Markle’s journey is shining a light on it.

The couple’s docuseries launched on Netflix on Dec. 8 and it is already causing a stir among viewers.
