Shay Mooney Reveals Reasoning Behind Incredible Weight Loss

Grammy-award-winning country music duo Dan + Shay are known for their hit singles "10,000 Hours" and "Tequila."

One half of Dan + Shay -- Shay Mooney -- recently lost over 50 pounds and is now opening up about the inspiration behind the incredible transformation.

Dan + Shay recently appeared on the "Today" show where co-host Craig Melvin complimented Mooney on his weight loss before asking him what made him lose 50+ pounds.

"You know, I've got to stand next to this guy all the time," he joked as he pointed to his bandmate Dan Smyers.

The "Speechless" singer then more seriously explained what led to the weight loss. "I had this moment where I was just not feeling healthy, he told the "Today" show. "It wasn't necessarily for my appearance, but it was to feel healthy."

"And I'm down about 53 or 54 lbs.," the country music singer added.

The "Today" show co-host Craig Melvin told Dan + Shay, “You’ve always been very handsome, but it looks like you’ve both dropped like half of Dan and half of Shay."

To which Dan Smyers hilariously said, "It’s all going to go out the window in New York City. You walk down the street, there's pizza everywhere."

Shay Mooney laughed and then agreed, saying New York has great food. "There's too many pizzas, man."

Back in October, the 30-year-old country music singer took to Instagram to share that he had lost nearly 50 pounds in five months.

“Thank you guys so much for all your kind words about me looking healthy,” he wrote. “Really means a lot. Been a little over 5 months I believe and I’m down almost 50lbs."

The "From the Ground Up" singer continued to share exactly how he dropped that much weight. "For those asking: Eating clean/not drinking alcohol and walking 7 miles a day. And some weights. That’s it!," he continued. "I completely changed my lifestyle and I’ve never felt better physically, mentally, and spiritually.”

Mooney also encouraged his fans who want to make a change in their lives by posting to his Instagram Story.

“I completely changed my lifestyle and I’ve literally never felt better physically, mentally, and spiritually,” he continued. “If you’re looking for a sign…Love y’all.”

Fellow country music singer Chris Lane complimented Mooney's weight loss, commenting a fire emoji on the post. And Tyler Rich, known for his song "The Difference," wrote "Looking lean brother ??."

And "You Proof" singer Morgan Wallen commented, "Man done got skinny on em!!!"

Shay Mooney and his wife Hannah Billingsley shared earlier his year that they are expecting their third child together.

“Mooney Baby #3! Thankful. Excited. Tired," they wrote in an Instagram post along with a video of the positive pregnancy test.

Mooney and Billingsley welcomed their first child, son Asher James, in January 2017. A few years later, the couple welcomed son Ames Alexander in February 2020.
