Prior to revealing her bipolar disorder, the singer had been candid about her anxiety and depression battles.

In her cover story interview with RS, she revealed she had to relearn “certain words” while on a medication “detox” after a 2018 psychosis episode and being diagnosed as bipolar.

“It was just that I was gone,” she admitted. “There was no part of me that was there anymore.”

The 30-year-old explained she was “guided” back to herself by a psychiatrist.

Selena Became "Unrecognizable" To Her Friends After Psychosis Episode

“I had to detox, essentially, from the medications I was on,” the singer said candidly. “I had to learn how to remember certain words. I would forget where I was when we were talking. It took a lot of hard work for me to (a) accept that I was bipolar, but (b) learn how to deal with it because it wasn’t going to go away.”

During this trying time, SelGo ended up in a treatment center in Connecticut because she was hearing voices and became paranoid.

According to a 2018 report by Page Six, Selena was admitted to a wellness program “designed for those individuals needing a retreat from high profile, ‘always on’ lifestyles.”

She admitted that she only “remembers snippets” of this time.

Things had gotten to such a low point that Selena said she was “unrecognizable” to her friends and spent “several months” in treatment before “walking out of psychosis.”

Since getting back to her old self, Selena has been taken off all medications but two.

Prior to her 2018 treatment center stay, SelGo had been to a couple other facilities to help with her mental health struggles.

In 2017, Selena told Vogue, “My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious. I started to have panic attacks right before getting onstage, or right after… Basically I felt I wasn’t good enough, wasn’t capable.”

She continued, “I wish more people would talk about therapy. We girls, we’re taught to be almost too resilient, to be strong and sexy and cool and laid-back, the girl who’s down. We also need to feel allowed to fall apart.”

SelGo has come a very long way since then and openly discusses her mental health and everyday struggles.

She founded the Rare Impact Fund which is part of her Rare Beauty brand.

“The Rare Impact Fund is part of Rare Beauty’s commitment to give people access to the resources they need to support their mental health. Rare Beauty donates 1% of all sales to the Rare Impact Fund and raises additional funds with philanthropic foundations, corporate partners, and individuals in our community to increase access to mental health services in educational settings,” per Rarebeauty.com.
