Actress Jennifer Lawrence has revealed a well-kept secret about her decision to star in the science fiction space film "Passengers."

The 2016 movie, which starred the actress and Chris Pratt in leading roles, came under fire from viewers after its debut for a scene that seemed to normalize abuse. Lawrence has now revealed that before starring in the film, her friend, British singer Adele advised her to turn down the role.

At the time, the "Hello" crooner opined that space films were overly common, seemingly suggesting there was no need for Lawrence to join the train of actresses who have appeared in such projects.

In retrospect, Lawrence shared in a recent interview that she wished she had heeded the advice in the wake of the film receiving backlash from critics.

In an interview with The New York Times, Lawrence reflected on her role in Morten Tyldum's 2016 science fiction film" Passengers." The actress shared that though she was eager to star in the movie, her A-list friend and multi-Grammy winner Adele advised her not to take up the part.

"Adele told me not to do it!" Lawrence told the publication per Huff Post. "She was like, 'I feel like space movies are the new vampire movies.' I should have listened to her."

Ultimately, Lawrence starred in the film alongside "Guardian of The Galaxy" star Chis Pratt. In hindsight, she wishes that she had listened to Adele's advice following the backlash the film received after it debuted.

'Passengers' Received Major Backlash And Negative Reviews

In "Passengers," Lawrence starred as Aurora Lane, a journalist cum writer, while Pratt played Jim Preston, a mechanical engineer. It centered on the pair being two passengers on a massive interstellar spaceship carrying thousands of people in sleep pods to a colony 60 light years from Earth.

However, due to a mechanical issue, Preston was awakened 90 years early from his induced hibernation. Later, he caused a mechanical fault to Lane's pod to wake her as he could no longer bear the thought of being alone on the ship.

Pratt's character's singular act, although caused by desperation, was not received well by fans when the film debuted. At the time, a considerable number of viewers opined that the part reeked of creepiness and normalized abuse.

In response to the backlash, Lawrence told Vogue in 2017 that she had not seen the shortcoming in the script when she first accepted the part.

"I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't spot it," she admitted. "I thought the script was beautiful — it was this tainted, complicated love story."

Despite the backlash, Lawrence believes that the film wasn't a failure before adding that she wished she had reviewed the part more prior to joining the cast.

"It definitely wasn't a failure," she added. "I'm not embarrassed by it by any means. There was just stuff that I wished I'd looked into deeper before jumping on."

Pratt mirrored her comments at the time, calling the situation "definitely a lesson." However, he shared that he was "happy with how the movie turned out" before adding that the film performed well enough to yield profit for the showrunners.

Since starring in the sci-fi role, Lawrence has starred in several other movies ranging from slashers to spy thrillers and even took another shot at being a superhero in Marvel's "Dark Phoenix."

Reflecting on her high-profile career, the actress told Deadline last month that she still felt shocked about her 2013 Best Actress Oscar win for her performance in "Silver Linings Playbook." She shared that her career has grown exponentially since that time, which made her come under so much pressure.

"Between The Hunger Games coming out and winning the Oscar, I became such a commodity that I felt like every decision was a big, big group decision," she said according to the publication.

On whether fans will see her star in franchise roles again, the actress revealed that she has shut the door on such parts, saying she was "just too old and brittle."
