Hadid and the singer, who’s real name is Abel Tesfaye, began dating back in 2015. Since that time, however, there have been quite the breakups and makeups between the two. In true fashion, After Hours seemingly reflects on the love and heartbreak that the singer has suffered over the years. Hadid and Tesfaye had been noted as back together up until August of 2019 which gave the singer plenty of time and material to start writing his next album.

In between the time that Hadid and The Weeknd were off again, the singer was linked to another famous face, pop-star Selena Gomez. It was reported that during that timeframe, The Weeknd wrote an entire album on his relationship with Gomez. The singer explained to Time magazine “Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done. The Weeknd said of the album, “It was very upbeat—it was beautiful.” But after the pair broke up, he decided to never release it. “I don’t want to perform something that I don’t feel,” he explained.

However, in the After Hours album, fans are freaking out that they think the track “Save Your tears” has a Selena Gomez reference. The very first line of the song, “I saw you dancing in a crowded room” leads people to believe the song is about Gomez, who recently had a song on her album called “Crowded Room.” Additionally, another fan pointed out a potential reference to Gomez in the song “Escape From LA” where he sings, “She’s all mine until he calls her line” which has fans guessing whether or not that’s a Justin Bieber reference.

But there is no doubt that After Hours has some serious references to his relationship with Hadid. In the song “Hardest to Love” The Weeknd sings “You try with me so many times ... And what we had is dead inside.” Additionally, in the song “Snowchild” The Weeknd sings "She never need a man, she what a man need/So I keep on falling for her daily/We was at Coachella going crazy.” It was reported that he met Hadid at Coachella in 2015, and then the pair were reportedly kissing at the 2018 festival, too.
