His Addiction Story

In "Friends: The Reunion," Perry explained to fans how his addiction began. He recalled getting into a jet skiing accident three years into filming "Friends." This made him depend a lot on Vicodin (acetaminophen or hydrocodone).

Even after healing, he continued using it and got addicted. "It wasn't my intention to have a problem with it. But from the start I liked how it made me feel, and I wanted to get more," he explained.

Fans also commented on his weight loss on several occasions. When asked about it, he said jokingly, "I was out of control and very unhealthy. I returned to my original birth weight." Later that year, he realized his addiction's seriousness and went to rehab in Minnesota.

His Upcoming Memoir Already Received Praises

In 2021, renowned publisher, editor, and senior Vice-president of Flatiron Books, Megan Lynch, complimented the upcoming project. Lynch will also be editing the memoir and discussing it in an interview with Deadline.

When asked, she noted that Perry's style was unique and was what the world needed at the moment. "We need humor, we need catharsis, and we need to agree on something — and Matthew's extraordinary story, told in his inimitable voice, is that thing," she said.

She praised his book and talked about its "unrivaled potential to bring people together." She also referenced the pandemic, "which feels especially galvanizing right now, a time of isolation and division." According to Perry, the memoir's release is scheduled for November 1st, 2022.
